School of Bowing Technics, Op. 2 - Book 1: Violin Method
Average Reviews:

I have played multiple instruments for the last 20+ years, and I have always found technique books to be boring because the progression of the exercises tend to be very slow. My violin teacher recommended this book and told me that this one was different. Each exercises in this book is challenging (even the first one reveals weakness in technique), and I have seen improvements in my bow handling after three weeks with this book. The exercises get progressively harder, which keeps things interesting, but the progression is not so rapid that it is overwhelming. Although the exercises help build strong bow foundation, THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR A BEGINNER. I do recommend this book to intermediate players, but like with all technique books you have to stick with it to see the real benefits.
HAPPY PLAYING!

Having compared this piano series to the more recent Faber, Alfred and Leonard, I have to say this is one of the most reasonable and sound (pedagogically speaking) ways of learning how to play piano. Each component of this series (technic, theory, piano and performance) when used TOGETHER provide a solid musical foundation whether you wish to one day play at Carnegie Hall or you just want a good solid musical foundation. All books reinforce taught concepts and students start on black keys then progress to certain piano "positions" of key of C,F,G and so forth. Great value and if you wish to incorporate more modern pop music (this has its own various styles of supplemental music) you can do so easily. One nice thing is that this series seems to progress faster than other series so you save money in the long run while getting the same conceptual material. Good value with great theory backing it.

Young Flandry: The Technic Civilization Saga Review

Young Flandry: The Technic Civilization Saga

It is terrific that Poul Anderson's works are remaining in print. Mr. Anderson was one of the true greats of the "Golden Age of Science Fiction." His Technic Civilization future history series is a wonderful group of interrelated science fiction stories. These "Dominic Flandry" stories are part of this, along with the Nicholas Van Rijn and David Falkayn stories which are equally superb.
Dominic Flandry is a secret agent of the Terran Empire. The stories are set in Poul Anderson's "Technic Civilization" series which is a dazzling vision of the future of humanity. It is the 31st Century. Humankind has established itself in a sprawling interstellar empire across tens of thousands of settled worlds. But the governance of these worlds has fallen into decay, and the Long Night--the foreseeable period that will occur after the Empire government falls, is in sight. Dominic Flandry brilliantly does all that he can to postpone this evil day, but he knows in his heart that human civilization is in its Indian Summer, with the long Winter approaching.
The novels are characterized by a wonderful variety of human cultures and alien races. The reader will come to know and like the Merseians, Betelgeusians, Chereionites, and may other alien civilizations. Poul Anderson had a gift for conjuring up imaginative and realistic aliens and they are great fun in these stories. I became hooked on the Flandry series in the 1970s (my misspent college and military years) and trust me, these stories have as much zip now as they did then.
In these three stories we see Dominic Flandry recruited into the Terran Intelligence Service and in regular James Bond style he thwarts enemy plots to destroy the Empire. My favorite story in this trilogy is the first one. Earth is engaged in a brush-fire war against its major enemy, the Merseians, on the planet Starkad. The war at first seems to be a minor skirmish, but then Flandry learns a terrible secret that could destroy the Empire. More would be telling, but this is a great story, and it sets the stage for all of the future Flandry stories. This is space opera at its absolute best. Highly recommended.

It is the twilight of the Terran Empire. The warriors who made it great are long gone now, and the Traders of the Polesotechnic League who made it possible are the dimly-remembered stuff of legend. Alien enemies prowl its outer precincts, and Sector Governors conspire for the Throne of Man. On Terra herself, those who occupy the labyrinthine corridors of power busy themselves with trivialities and internal politics, as outside the final darkness gathers. In this scene of terminal disarray one man stands like a giant: Dominic Flandry, Agent of the Terran Empire. In three full-length novels, he will rise from young ensign to lieutenant commander as he outthinks rivals and thwarts adversaries, blazing a trail across the galaxy in defense of an Empire which barely appreciates him and against alien enemies who appreciate him all too well.

Technics and Creativity: Gemini G.E.L. Review

Technics and Creativity: Gemini G.E.L.

A catalogue raisonne (to early 1971; the exhibition was May 5 - July 6, 1971), published in a boxed edition of 22,500, with its problematic Jasper Johns "Target," an offset lithograph with an applique paintbrush and three watercolor disks. In addition to the print (which is glued to the inside front cover of the box), the box should contain the catalog, a sheet of protective foam and a loose MoMA publication slip. The foam sheet is normally discolored and usually has three circular offprints from the watercolor disks. According to Richard S. Field ("Jasper Johns Prints 1970-1977"), the image was derived from a pencil drawing and collage of 1960 then in the Sonnabend collection. A hand-pulled edition of 50 copies and six artists proofs was printed by Kenneth Tyler at Gemini in 1971. The offset edition of 22,500 was produced by Graphic Press, Los Angeles. Johns's participation in this enterprise was, at best, limited to the Gemini printing, which was hand-signed and numbered. The signature on the MoMA target is mechanically reproduced. If it appears to have been signed in ink or pencil, crude forgery is indicated. If the target itself is colored, the work has been done by a previous owner. (I once saw a copy that looked more like a Kenneth Noland than a Jasper Johns.) If you are going to pay the price this item usually commands, be sure it is a "genuine," mint copy.

College-level readers of architecture or environmental design will find this a fine history which uses themes and a chronological arrangement from the 18th century to modern times to survey the history of environmental design. While The Environmental Imagination: Technics and Poetics of the Architectural Environment could have also been featured in our Arts section, it's reviewed here for its wider applications to any college-level holding strong on poetics and environment: essays consider qualitative dimensions of the environment and both old and new technologies of mechanical services, building design choices, and diversity.

This title, from a well-regarded and established expert, explores the changing relationship between the poetic intentions and technical means of environmental design in architecture. Working thematically and chronologically from the eighteenth century to the present day, these essays reach beyond the narrow conventional view of the purely technical to encompass the poetics of architecture, redefining the historiography of environmental design.Through an assessment of the works of several leading figures throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Hawkes deftly shows the growth of environmental awareness and adds a consideration of the qualitative dimension of the environment to the existing, primarily technological, narratives. Essays on earlier buildings highlight the response of pioneering architects to the ‘new' technologies of mechanical services and their influence on the form of buildings, while the late twentieth-century designis explored in particular depth to illustrate individual strands of the environmental diversity of modern practice.

Man and Technics: A Contribution to a Philosophy of Life Review

Man and Technics: A Contribution to a Philosophy of Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Spengler wrote "Man and Technics" as a short and accessible supplement to his 'magnum opus', "The Decline of the West". Despite being short this is in fact a truly GREAT book. Spengler examines man's way on earth from the perspective of a philosophical anthropology. In agreement with the other exponents of reactionary modernism in Weimar Germany, Spengler focuses on technology as the critical feature of the Faustian Western Civilization. Spengler uses the Goethian hero in order to disclose to the reader the likely outcome of man's blind worship of instrumental technological reason. At the same time he scorns the West for its imperialism and violation of the life-style of other cultures. Apart from the -mostly accurate - prognoses that it makes, "Man and Technics" reveals a detached view of humanity as if perceived from an Archimedean point of view. Spengler remains a great thinker, rather misunderstood, who ought to be rediscovered by modern intellectuals for his penetrating insight and his uncompromising honesty!

"In the following pages I lay before the reader a few thoughts that are taken from a larger work on which I have been engaged for years. It had been my intention to use the same method which in The Decline of the West I had limited to the group of the higher Cultures, for the investigation of their historical pre-requisite - namely, the history of Man from his origins. But experience with the earlier work showed that the majority of readers are not in a postion to maintain a general view over the mass of ideas as a whole, and so lose themselves in the detail of this or that domain which is familiar to them, seeing the rest either obliquely or not at all.In consequence they obtain an incorrect picture, both of what I have written and of the subject-matter about which I wrote. Now, as then, it is my conviction that the destiny of Man can only be understood by dealing with all the provinces of his activity simultaneously and comparatively, and avoiding the mistake of trying to elucidate some problem, say, of his politics or his religion or his art, solely in terms of particular sides of his being, in the belief that, this done, there is no more to be said.Nevertheless, in this book I venture to put forward some of the questions. They are a few among many. But they are interconnected, and for that reason may serve, for the time being, to help the reader to a provisional glimpse into the great secret of Man's destiny."--- Oswald Spengler

Autonomous Technology: Technics-out-of-Control as a Theme in Political Thought Review

Autonomous Technology: Technics-out-of-Control as a Theme in Political Thought
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is simply the best introduction to the philosophy and politics of technology. No competition.
Winner discusses a wide range of literature on the subject, from authors such as Jacques Ellul, Marx, Heidegger, and others. He uses these ideas as a springboard to cover many of the ideas they brought up with much more depth and clarity.
Some of the most interesting ideas discussed include (amongst others):
* "Reverse adaptation" -- when technologies force us to modify our ends/goals/purposes in order to meet the needs of our means/tools/techniques
* "Technological imperative" -- how technology changes the structure of human societies, even before they have been put into use (e.g. in order to create an environment conducive to their use)
* "Neutrality" -- Winner smashes the myth of tools being "neutral" (the idea that tools can't be inherently good or bad, and that only the way they are *used* can be good/bad)
Don't be put off by the fact that the book was originally published back in the 1970s -- the ideas are every bit as applicable (much more so actually...) today as they were then.
Highly recommended.

The truth of the matter is that our deficiency does not lie in the wantof well-verified "facts." What we lack is our bearings. The contemporary experienceof things technological has repeatedly confounded our vision, our expectations, andour capacity to make intelligent judgments. Categories, arguments, conclusions, andchoices that would have been entirely obvious in earlier times are obvious nolonger. Patterns of perceptive thinking that were entirely reliable in the past nowlead us systematically astray. Many of our standard conceptions of technology reveala disorientation that borders on dissociation from reality. And as long as we lackthe ability to make our situation intelligible, all of the "data" in the world willmake no difference. ;From the Introduction

PMC Technic: A Collection of Techniques for Precious Metal Clay
Average Reviews:

Another wonderful book from Tim McCreight, who has edited this collection of techniques for PMC by assembling a veritable stable of stars. These brilliant artisans share their specific forte and we are definitely the richer and wiser as we work through their lovely projects.
The 10 artists cover : Syringe by Tonya Davidson, Hinges with Celie Fago, Bezels by Jennifer Kahn, Fusing Sterling and PMC by Doris King, Terry Kovalcik looks at Developing Form with Slip and the amazing Noortje Meijerink takes us on a PMC and Ceramic journey. Kelly Russell looks at using Stencils while Barabara Becker Simon merges Lampworking and PMC with a flair all of her own, add CeCe Wires Water Etching and J.Fred Woell's gorgeous Coreless Beads and I doubt that this book would not have something for everyone.
This book is not for a beginner, but you will certainly aspire to recreate the projects, beautiful each and every one of them. Lovely hand drawn pencil illustrations of both the steps and techniques compliment a rich gallery of colour photographs. The techniques are covered in detail - up to 20 pages, so you are left in no doubt how to create.
This book clearly states PMC and in fact exclusively uses this product throughout, however, the ideas are transferrable accross the Metal Clay's. Thank you for another wonderful book which I am sure will be read and re-read many times.

Alfred's Basic Prep Technic Book: Level D (Alfred's Basic Piano Library)

I would call myself a beginner piano teacher, as I play the piano myself but have had no instruction as to how to teach others to play. I now have four beginner students, whom I have been teaching for a little over a year.
I love the Alfred method. The four books: technic, lesson, solo/recital, and theory all seem to really work well together. The songs coordinate with each other, so for each new concept taught in the lesson books, the student has a warm-up, a solo piece, and some theory work to back it up. I find this to be very effective. It gives the students a chance to see several examples of each concept, and practice each new concept in different ways until they achieve perfection with it. It also really walks the teacher through each concept very clearly, giving definitions for musical terms and clear instructions for which songs go together. I feel like the order in which concepts are taught also makes a lot of sense.
Overall, it's a good method for a teacher who doesn't know a whole lot about HOW to teach another person to play the piano!
I currently have some of my students on this level (Prep Course), and others on the regular beginner levels. I love how all of the different levels are interchangeable, so gifted students can advance more quickly, and students who need a little extra reinforcement can stay on the lower levels. The map for how this all works is on the back of all of the books, which you can see on the book preview. So many great things about Alfred!

Sir Dominic Flandry: The Last Knight of Terra (Technic Civilization)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Earthman, Go Home". Although the natives prefer he leave, Captain Sir Dominic Flandry of the Intelligence Corps, Imperial Terrestrial Navy visits the lost world Unan Besar. His mission is to bring the planet back into the Terran Empire before the Merseians use it as a military base.
"Hunters of the Sky Cave". Flandry helps a woman escape from a Merseian supported insurgency while setting up a counterinsurgency, but ponders that "We Claim These Stars" even while the Terran Empire will go the way of previous superpowers during the Long Night
"The Warriors from Nowhere". Flandry battles his Merseian adversary Aycharaych, who has the advantage of telepathy.
"A Knight of Ghosts and Shadows". The Terran Empire is rapidly decaying as fortyish Flandry knows due partly from high level corruption. When Molitor seizes control, Flandry supports him as he believes a strong military leader is the only hope to prevent the Empire from imploding immediately. He also recently learns he has a son after a tryst with Persis the dancer and begins one with aristocratic slave Kossara from Dennitza. However, he will soon find out that his greatest success leaves him empty with nothing more than pride for accomplishing his job, no challenges left that matters, and a despondent look back at what he achieved and what he failed at.
The four reprints are entertaining tales of outer space daring do. The first three star the carefree James Bond in space swashbuckling hero, which feel somewhat repetitive although Hunters of the Sky Cave hint at a darker outlook. The last contribution is superb as a middle age Flandry muses that all he did over the last couple of decades was place his thumb in the dyke while the slow flood of rot and decay spreads; he concludes he slowed down the death of the empire as all nations turn to stardust.

Captain Dominic Flandry has been knighted for his many services to the Terran Empire—an Empire which is old, jaded, and corrupt, as Flandry well knows. And while that "Sir" before his name may be an added attraction to comely ladies (not that he has ever lacked for the pleasant company of the same), he expects that it will also bring him less welcome attention from envious "colleagues" within the empire. What it is not likely to do is make him more of an object of interest to the Merseians, whose plots he has repeatedly foiled and who are much too aware of how much simpler their plans to replace the Empire would be if he were the late Sir Dominic Flandry. Flandry himself has come to understand that there may be no more point to all his victories than that a few trillion of his fellow creatures may live out their lives before the inevitable coming of the Long Night of galactic barbarism. At best, he may have postponed its coming and shortened its duration. But if that is the most he can achieve, so be it—he'll keep on fighting, hoping that the barbarians too will pass, followed by a new round of civilization.
