Excavator handbook: Advanced techniques for operators Review

Excavator handbook: Advanced techniques for operators
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Every young excavator operator should have this book. Is very well laid out, assumes you know the fundamentals and helps you to improve skills and understand methods. This book will help the experienced operator with his creativity and provide a few new ideas.
Only flaw is that some of the techniques are not common to all lines of work as the author indicates. An example of this is the trenching section. The author indicates in almost all cases, the excavator will never dig the trench and lay pipe at the same time. While this may be true for larger concrete pipe in deep trenches, with smaller pipe this is almost never the case.

Technical Drawing (12th Edition) Review

Technical Drawing (12th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This text was the basic drafting manual that I used during my technical education; its use did not end with school, however, since I refer to it frequently in my occupation. It tells everything that needs to be explained and described in the general drawing problems that might be encountered in industrial practice. It contains excellent descriptions and illustrations for: Drawing Threads, Fasteners & Springs Geometric Constructions Clear, Concise instructions in using Drafting Instruments, (before the time of Computer Aided Drafting & Desing, in any case). An Excellent overview of the Industrial Design & Development Process, (which I wish my supervisors would read). Sectional Drawing. This book is to drafting what Machinery's Handbook, of the Industrial Press, is to the metal working industries. There are a variety of Drafting Textbooks available, but none are incrementally better, let alone drasticaly better.

Classic Guitar Technique, Vol 1 (Book and CD) (Shearer Series)

I purchased this book at the request of my Classic Guitar Teacher. So far it has been an unbelievably concise and knowledgeable book. Each section gives detailed descriptions and pictures on the technique and application of what is being studied. This book is fundamental to any beginning to intermediate classic guitarist. Even those who are self taught would be wise to purchase this book and polish their skills.

Aaron Shearers Classic Guitar Technique has long been the core guitar method used by generations of classical guitarists. Alfred Publishing is proud to present Aarons first fully revised and re-edited edition of this benchmark work. In addition to new exercises and music, Aaron and music editor Thomas Kikta have included critical new insights into core guitar techniques. Plus, for the first time, the book now comes with a demonstration and play-along CD. Students will be able to hear and emulate the tone and feel of the CD recording and they will have the opportunity to play their pieces as duets with the included recording. Investment Valuation: Tools and Techniques for Determining the Value of Any Asset, Second Edition Review

Investment Valuation: Tools and Techniques for Determining the Value of Any Asset, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For investors subscribed to discounted cash flows valuation (DCF), there is no other books that offer the kind of in-depth anlaysis (both in step-by-step description and available scenarios using real companies) like this book does. Plus, Professor Damodaran maintains a free website where Excel-based valuation models and industry data are periodically updated. These features make the book invaluable. In short, if I am allowed to buy only one investment book, this is the one.
But since I can buy as many books as I want, it would be more important to tell what this book does not do. First, it's always important to get a second opinion. In this case, it would be something other than DCF. Currently, DCF and relative valuation (such as PE and PV) are the dominent valuation methods used in the U.S. And yes, they are both covered in-depth by this book, in addition to the Economic Value Addded method which is gaining momentum in recent years. But this book essentially dismisses the income statements in favor of cash flows statements for valuing securities, preferring DCF to relative valuation. This is certainly understandable in lights of recent manipulation of GAAP income by offenders like Enron, WorldCom and Tyco. But I believe it's important for investors to hear the voice for income statements valuation method. For that investors should get James English's Applied Equity Analysis - another must-have - as a second valuation reference book. Secondly, this book uses CAPM model for finding the discount rate. Again, it is true that CAPM is the most widely used model in the U.S., but I came to a conclusion, after reading close to a hundred critically acclaimed articles published in the last fifty years as part of my MBA requirements, that factor models provide better tracking of stock prices than CAPM does. Unfortunately, there is no good book available. For institutional investors, they can have models from BARRA and Wilshire, etc, but individual investors would have to construct their own, probably (like me) using the Fama-French three-factor model. Description of their model is available mostly from theirs and other published papers. Data are available from Kenneth French's own website at Dartmouth. Now since you read all the way through my review, here is your reward: go to Damodaran's website and download the manuscript of this book for free if you are really frugal.

A crucial tool for professionals, teachers, and student architects and engineers, this important volume belongs on the desk of anyone involved in the construction of buildings in areas that are vulnerable to earthquakes. The world's most seismically active locales are represented in the projects profiled, where techniques for resisting catastrophic earthquake damage have been applied to many different types of buildings. Sites studied are in countries along the Pacific Rim-the west coasts of North, Central, and South America; Australasia and the east coast of Asia and all its islands, known as the "Ring of Fire"; and less-affected areas in Eastern Europe, Greece, and Turkey. Some projects show the latest techniques in earthquake resistance conceived by architects such as Rafael Mono and Arata Isozaki. Others deal with post-disaster situations; for example, a Polshek & Partners project to retrofit and add a new wing to a museum that suffered great damage in California's 1989 earthquake. Many sizes of buildings are viewed, from very small projects, like a house by Shigeru Ban designed for the homeless after the Kobe disaster of 1995, to huge buildings such as the San Francisco Main Library by I. M. Pei. Categories of construction are wide-ranging: residential, commercial, religious, medical, and cultural facilities are all considered in this comprehensive report on life-saving construction strategies.

I have read all of the "sales 101" books, Zig Ziglar, Tom Hopkins, even Hurb Cohen's "you can negotiate anything" and I feel from my personal experience that this book not only gives you the tools to become more sucessful, but gives you the confidence in yourself to "get back on track". I sell ATM machines to business owners, and have recently moved into a new town with new prospects, requiring me to get back in "the field" to knock on some doors. This book helped me get over the uncomfortable feeling of cold calling, and put everything into prospective. It also helped me remember the basic elements of the sale. This guy is great, and I just bought the follow up book, CLOSING TECHNIQUES that is equally helpful-I just wanted to pass on the info, sales can be tough, this just makes it simple, as well as more rewarding!

This books covers just about every aspect of working with wire, including some basic silversmithing in the final section. The illustrations and instructions are clear, the pictures are excellent and some projects are included. Experienced silversmiths will probably find this book too simple, but it is an excellent source for beaders who sometimes work with wire and have only average wire work skills. A gallery of designs is included. Many readers will be able to get some inspiration from the designs and techniques, as they are not the 'same old' that is repeated in many beading magazines. This book will have a definite place in my library along with my (many) other beading books and I am sure to refer back to it for some of the techniques described.

First of all this book has nice crystal clear glossy photo's, to me that doubles the value right there! I have another book with black and white picture on regular paper and while the content is quite good it just doesn't beckon me to read it like this one. Second of all while the cover shows him wearing a Gi there is no freakin Gi's in the book thank goodness!! If you are sick and tired of every single move being explained...and reach and grab his Gi this is the book for you! No Bath Robe wrestling in here! Third of all this book is easily a $20 book and one of the sellers is selling it new for $9.50, snatch it up before they come to their senses! The other reviewer talked about it like he was going to give it 5 or 4 stars and then gave it 3 for some reason? Great prodution quality, no Gi, all the good moves you need to know, seems like 5 stars to me.

Contemporary Techniques in Architecture (Architectural Design) Review

Contemporary Techniques in Architecture (Architectural Design)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What I really appreciate about Rahim's volume is the nuts-and-bolts (or NURBS-and-splines) seriousness with which it approaches the real-world challenges of digital architecture. This means that it gives as much attention to the optimal design of some frankly squamous-lookin' load-bearing and stress-distributing structures as it does to the (largely post-Deleuzian) theory underlying this work.
Up until now, most of the reference materials commonly available on the topic have contented themselves with providing pretty pictures of next-generation architectural blobjects - all skin and no interior - so I'm grateful that someone is finally wrestling with (some of) the practicalities. (And if you just have to talk High Theory, there's no better guide than the brilliant, insightful, and reasonably accessible Manuel deLanda.)
I just wish Rahim could have done it without resorting to (or permitting the other authors in this volume to indulge in) the usual jargon-choked theoryspeak. I mean, come on: "dynamic structuration of mobile relations"? This material is sufficiently important that there shouldn't be any need to pump it up with jargon to make it impressive.
Worth buying, worth working with, but not for the faint of heart. (And damn, are some of these things pretty.)

Contemporary Techniques in Architecture addresses the translation of techniques in design methodology to their architectural realisation, at the scale of space, material programme and construction. It challenges technique-driven experimental architects at the next intellectually rigorous level - that of exploring concepts and translating them into their material counterparts. How do you think through the building of avant-garde forms? The title includes the work of high-profile philosophers, architects and engineers, such as Manuel Delanda who wrote 1000 Years of Non-Linear History; Greg Lynn and Foreign Office Architects; and Cecil Balmond of Ove Arup, who worked with Daniel Libeskind on his proposal for the Spiral Building for the V&A Museum in London, as well as with Philip Johnson and Studio Baad on the Chavasse Park Project featured here.Intellectually stimulating and visually engaging, with its inclusion of spectacular writing, designs, manufactured prototypes and full-scale buildings, Contemporary Techniques in Architecture takes architectural publishing's treatment of the digital to a new level, looking at its potential in a realised form as well as a creative medium.Johan BettumScott CohenForeign Office ArchitectsKolatan MacDonald StudioGreg LynnObjectileOCEAN NorthAli RahimServo

The Information Society: A Sceptical View Review

The Information Society: A Sceptical View
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
May supplies a logical and sceptical analysis of advances in information technology (IT), where these often have been accompanied by breathless claims of generating big societal changes. He correctly distinguishes between new technology that causes existing social interactions to be more efficient or faster, and those that make truly new social mores. For the latter, he suggests that biotechnology may ultimately fall in this category. Its potential for life saving or life extending advances may cause far reaching social upheaval.
His views are a good counterpoint to much hype about technology. Naturally, he cannot resist remarking on the Y2K imbroglio. How this was largely puffed up in an echo of the dot com and telco zeitgeist. A fairy tale of its times.
The book is useful in giving you a more nuanced perspective on technological change. It even dares suggest that earlier times experienced more fundamental changes!

In this timely new book, Christopher May surveys some of the most influential and important writings that declare we are entering a new information age. It is frequently asserted that this will bring about a social transformation and that the character of work is being transformed by the widespread deployment of information and communication technologies. In a similar manner we are told the world of politics is changing, with new communities emerging which will alter the practices of politics in profound and novel ways, and which will significantly reduce the role of the state and government. Each of these claims is subjected to a detailed critique. Christopher May suggests that while there have clearly been some major and important changes prompted by the information technology revolution, these are often changes only in the forms of activity and not their substance. The information age represents some marked and important continuities with previous social practices, rather than the overthrow of all that has gone before. This sceptical view balances and moderates the often hysterical celebration of the new information society - a celebration which, the author argues, often lapses into an apologia for modern capitalism. The Information Society will be of particular interest to students in sociology, politics, political economy, media and cultural studies and information studies.

Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques: A Contemporary Guide to the Ancient Investment Techniques of the Far East Review

Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques: A Contemporary Guide to the Ancient Investment Techniques of the Far East
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a few books on candlesticks. I bought others which were cheaper, even though many reviews pointed towards Nisons' work. Note that in Australia, we are talking about $35 (other books) compared to $150 (Nison's book) ... so anyway, after buying many others, and looking all over the 'net for info. on Candlesticks, I ran into Nisons' book in a shop, looked through it and had to have it.
It has a LOT LOT LOT more depth than the others. There is more to candlesticks (or any price movement analysis) than just a bunch of patterns, names, formations ... the other books are far far too brief. I cannot emphasise this enough.
Look at all the other reviews for this book, many many good words said.
It is very readable, very clear, the examples are excellent, but most valuable are the insights for all the patterns ... that other books simply do not have.
Sure, it costs a bit more than the other candlestick books, but hey, how much money are you trading? Does an extra 30 or 50 bucks make that much difference for the extra insight you will gain?
This is not just the best ~Candlestick~ book, but it is a very very good TA book as well. Candlesticks are, after all, just a way of plotting price movements.
Note that, in searching the web for info. on TA and investing, this book came up time and time again as ~highly~ recommended. Now I pass that recommendation on.
Note also Nison has another book, "Beyond Candlesticks", and while I think that this is also a good book, get this one first and learn it all, the second book concentrates more on a few "Advanced" techniques, I don't know if they are so much advanced as they are just a few more techniques + brushing over what is in the first book. Get this first book, because it has more depth on the essentials that you need to know. Get the other book later, don't try and save money by jumping to the second one in the hope it will make the first obsolete, don't try and save money by getting a cheaper candlestick book, don't brush this stuff off thinking you've learnt all the candlestick stuff just by seeing a couple of patterns and names.
I also highly recommend Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets, this is recently updated and so incredibly good.
Beginner trader: will help you a lot, a very good investment, but also look to the book recommended above.
Intermediate: what are you doing? making a profit? get the book. Not making a profit? get the book, or get out of trading.
Advanced: why don't you have it? it should be on everyone's bookshelf, have you no pride? can't you afford it?
This is one of those trading books you cannot afford not to have. I don't give that rating to many other trading books.
Good luck!
Oh, and it is enjoyable to read.

Traditional Western methods for chart analysis (the basis of all technical analyses) use bar or points and figure charts. Yet over 100 years before these methods originated, the Japanese were using their own style of technical analysis for use in the rice futures market. This technique - known as the Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques because of its close resemblance to candlesticks - has recently been attracting attention because it provides unique insights into the market. This work features over 300 charts that use candlesticks alone and in conjunction with Western charting techniques, and explains their use.

The publisher's blurb suggests that this is a book containing a number of NEW projects but it is really an EXACT reprint of "LEGO Mindstorm Masterpieces: Building and Programming Advanced Robots" with an updated cd. Although the cd includes PDFs of a few other books it does not include the cds shipped with those books so you are better off buying the books themselves, and the chances are that if you are looking to buy this book, you already have those other books. Similarly, the cd includes some software for drawing LEGO diagrams, etc. but offers no information on how to use these programs effectively so you could just as easily download the software and find guidance on using it on the internet. Unfortunately, the software that is provided does not include any of the programming tools or alternative firmware installs available to enhance your robot's behaviour. Overall, if you do not already own a copy of "LEGO Mindstorm Masterpieces" then this book is worth the money, but if you do, consider yourself warned.

I was surprised to find that the book was only 40 pages long. The illustrations are good and the information is presented in a concise and efficient manner. The book covers roughly 8 types of knots and 9 different suturing methods. So obviously it is ideal for someone looking to get a quick hands-on start on basic suturing.[update 4-5-07] I think I may have underestimated this book. It is actually a nice and concise primer that I have referenced again and again. It is small enough to fit in a white coat or lab jacket pocket. Here is a summarized Table of Contents: One and two-handed square knot, Instrument tie square knot, Miller's and Modified Miller's knot; Suture materials, needles, methods, and patterns(appositional, tension, and inverting); Removing sutures and Basic Sterile Technique.
