Techniques for Nuclear and Particle Physics Experiments Review

Techniques for Nuclear and Particle Physics Experiments

Leo's book is a good, concise and concerning standard methods especially in nuclear spectroscopy up-to-date summary of the field. The basic physics ideas are introduced, although not too deeply discussed (but this is a book for the experimentalist, therefore no objections). It is a helpful companion in simple experimental considerations which come to an experimental nuclear spectroscopist every day: The color codes of resistors and the overview over the connectors in a CAMAC crate are examples for these features.
Elaborate references are given for each section that make it possible for the reader to find additional descriptions rather easily. Additional insight on dosimetry and radiation damage and some remarks on statistics make this book an interesting alternative to G.F. Knoll's "Radiation detection and measurement".
The emphasis of Leo's approach is surely (a) on a concise overview rather than an in-depth discussion and (b) on nuclear spectroscopy (gamma and particle detection at some MeV or so) rather than medium and large-scale high-energy physics experiments. Widely used components of high-energy physics equipment are, however, presented, but additional literature might be needed.
One final remark to my fellow reviewer Fabio: One example for a "statistical process" is e.g. the number of electron-hole pairs created in the detection of a charged particle or gamma ray. This process is truely statistical, i.e. it does not depend on things that the experimentator has at hand. The intrinsic resolution of a high-purity Germanium detector with respect to a, say, 3 MeV gamma ray cannot be changed (at least to a large extent). Have a look into Leo's book if you don't believe me!

Paper Cutting Techniques for Scrapbooks & Cards Review

Paper Cutting Techniques for Scrapbooks and Cards

This book has some attractive patterns, so, if you're just looking for patterns to blindly copy, it is probably fine. Unfortunately, however, it bills itself as offering tips and techniques -- which are very sketchy at best -- and the Resources don't even include Papercuttings By Alison, which is where 99% of US papercutters purchase their supplies. You would HAVE to own at least one other papercutting book to be able to use this -- which is a darned shame, since it would have been very simple for the author to mention the basic things every papercutter knows about using paper, scissors, knives, etc. If you're going to NAME your book Techniques, you really ought to include as much information as possible. Conversely, if she'd named her book Patterns, it would have been fine. I just wouldn't want anyone to think that this is a standalone book on the subject ... It is a book of patterns, with a few tips included.

Terrifying Technique for Guitar Review

Terrifying Technique for Guitar

i have been through numerous method and technique books and this one is by far the best. The books starts off with some good chromatic exercises. The next section contains 37 linear scalar sequences that can be applied to any style of music, especially hard rock. From there, Carl introduces some three-note-per string patterns including major 2nd, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, and 6ths intervals. There are several indepth pentatonic sequences as well as some alternate arpeggios. Carl goes over in detail the correct way to apply sweep picking arpeggios into your musical ideas. Hybrid picking, legato, one handed arpeggios, tapping and bending are also covered in this extensive guide to building chops. There are over 200 exercises that are all on the CD that comes with the book. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to improve their technical facility and overcome physical barriers.

The Frank Gambale Technique Book I (Manhattan Music Publications) Review

The Frank Gambale Technique Book I (Manhattan Music Publications)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent book for anyone who is serious about learning to play guitar. Although, I bought this book for $40 not $100+ as listed here. Gambale breaks everything down into chord types. Minor 7, major 7, unaltered dominant 7, altered dominant 7, minor 7 (b5), diminished. He attacks each chord type with several soloing approaches. He lists and gives examples of appropriate modes, arpeggios, pentatonics that can be used over that specific chord type. For example. When discussing a minor 7 chord he says there are two ways to look at it. You can look at it as a II chord or a VI chord. Say you are playing a dmin7. Dmin 7 is the II of C and the VI of F. So in this case you can use D Dorian or Aeolian. He also says that if you treat Dmin7 as the second of C you can use. Dmin, Emin, Amin blues/pentatonic scales over the Dmin7. Since the minor chords are II, III, and VI in any major scale. You can also approach soloing using arpeggios from cmaj over the Dmin and you can play these in fourths to get a more interesting sound, rather than just running up or down arpeggios. He has gone through all of that by page 8 and there is about 80 pages in the book. So basically, there is a huge wealth of knowlege in this book and it is an excellent way for a guitarist to get away from moving to the trusty pentatonic scales as soon as its time to solo. This book also comes with a Cd containing samples of each excercise as well as a couple short songs that Gambale has put together. Im not a big fan of the effects he uses while playing the excercises, but it doesn't really take anything away from the learning experience. If you can get a chance to get a hold of this book you should give it a chance, but know that it will take some serious time and experimentation to make these theoretical ideas come out of your guitar as music. They cant really be charging $107 for this, can they? Keep your eyes open and you should be able to find this book for around $40.

I own 10 manuals of histochemical and histological technique. I use this one 4 times as often as the other nine together. Kiernan describes most useful techniques well. His own neurological technique is unbeatable. He discusses dye chemistry thoroughly, and discusses staining mechanisms well. On top of all this, the book is an incredible bargain at [money] for the paperback.

Honey-mustard chicken roasting in an oven, fashion models sporting the latest line of lipstick, blush and balm, and the piercing sound of paper being torn in half may not seem to have much in common. But in reality, food, cosmetic and paper products similar to these often undergo rigorous testing at some stage or another as part of a fascinating-and stimulating-scientific process: sensory evaluation.Aimed at the practicing sensory professional, Sensory Evaluation Techniques, Third Edition, makes product evaluation clear, concise, and approachable, with the simplest to the most complex sensory methods and their interpretation spelled out. The book explores the theory and applications of sensory evaluation methods with sufficient background material to allow the user to understand the evaluation of sensory perception and actually perform sensory tests. The book's "how-to" description of sensory evaluation methods features all of the commonly-used practical sensory tests, followed by a guide to selecting the optimal method for a given problem. Descriptions are accompanied by several practical examples. Consumer research techniques are included, and the book contains complete instructions for the Spectrumä method of descriptive analysis, as well as relevant selection of those statistical techniques the sensory analyst needs, with examples illustrating the analysis of sensory tests.New in the Third Edition is the latest information on sensory tests and statistical techniques for the analysis of sensory data being introduced all over the world. Accept first off if you buy this book, there are very few pretty pictures. This is not a coffee table book. There are however many detailed diagrams and tons of information that any serious bonsai artist should have. Naka de-mystifies the art of bonsai and gives clear cut diagrams that are easy to understand and (even more important) easy to apply to your own trees.
If you want a picture book of bonsai this is not for you, if you grow bonsai you should buy this book. In fact if you only buy one book on bonsai, buy this one.

Basic Techniques of Go Review

Basic Techniques of Go
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you know the basic rules of go and want to improve, how do you move from beginner to intermediate play? One option is to buy a bunch of intermediate books, each covering a different topic (like tesuji or handicap play). Sound expensive? Maybe this is the book for you.
As an intermediate book that covers most major elements of the game, "Basic Techniques of Go" is hard to beat. Where else can you find a Go book that covers so many topics? Overall strategy? Got it. Detailed tactics of common positions? Got it. Tesuji? Yose (endgame)? Fuseki? Joseki? Handicap play? Got them all. That being said, the largest sections of this book cover tesuji, yose (endgame), and 9, 6, and 4-stone handicap play.
Now of course, having all these topics means this book is DENSE. Be prepared to work out positions that seem obvious to the authors. Also, the introduction lets you know which chapters are more difficult, so just save those for later (or just skim them).
I only give this book 4 stars because the layout could be more organized. It's systematic enough to be a reference, but it may be hard to find the specific thing you're looking for. Also, the number of Japanese go terms can be a bit daunting, and there is no glossary (this may have been fixed in recent editions).
Overall, I feel that "Basic Techniques of Go" is an excellent whole-game intermediate book that will last you a long time. I think this book will help players ranked 15-kyu to 1-dan, but I especially recommend it for 10-kyu to 5-kyu players.

Clinical Chemistry: Principles, Procedures, Correlations (Bishop, Clinical Chemistry)

This is an excellent book to use as an introduction to clinical chemistry. The chapter layout is logical and the content finds an appropriate balance keeping things concise but with enough depth for most student MTs and generalists. Specialist lab personnel and student MTs with clinical chemistry as a career interest would probably find the Tietz Fundamentals (not the Tietz Textbook-that's overkill) to be a better investment though as it covers topics at greater depth.

Legal Drafting: Process, Techniques, and Exercises (Casebook) Review

Legal Drafting: Process, Techniques, and Exercises (Casebook)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a paralegal student in Alabama, and this book was our text for a transactional drafting class. While I know I will probably never have to draft a contract or agreement from scratch, this book will be on my desk if I do.
The first chapters deal with drafting in general--proper English (grammar), good punctuation, and form. The later chapters deal with specifics--ambiguity, vague references, the dreaded and/or, and lists.
The book is an easy read--I would guess the typeface is a 12- or 14-point. Some of it is a little too simplistic, but for the most part it's right on target. There were several of us taking both this drafting class and another writing class this term, and the second professor made a comment about our writing getting more concise and to the point. This book must be getting it into our heads!

It contains text, examples, and exercises that deal with both contract and statutory drafting - making the text suitable for a general drafting course, or one that focuses on either of the two more specialized forms of a drafted document. Techniques Of Medieval Armour Reproduction: The 14th Century Review

Techniques Of Medieval Armour Reproduction: The 14th Century
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first joined the SCA about 2 years ago, and took an immediate fancy to the armorer's craft. In the two years that I've been there, I have never fought in anything that I didn't make myself. I began studying armor construction at about the same time I started, but didn't really get started on making anything decent until about a year ago, and this book was extremely helpful in getting me get turned in the right direction. The second half of the book provides a very useful manual for making specific pieces; for example, I absolutely love the thoroughness of his description for making a leg harness. The first half of the book, however, was the most useful; descriptions of the tools, applications, hammerwork techniques, polishing, strapping, padding, and the like were all covered in very thoughtful detail, which makes this book an excellent source of reference that I use quite often. I don't have any particular gripes about this book, but I will say this: this book is intended for historically authentic designs, so a bit of alteration might be required contrary to the design schemes presented if you're in the SCA. However, overall, I don't feel that that is enough to bring this book down to four stars, especially since I believe that historical authenticity, rather than SCA armor, was his goal when he wrote this book; overall, it ranks at a very solid five (although I would really like to see the author do another on SCA armor design).

Few historical icons can match the evocative power of the medieval suit of armour, and this epic new book is a complete course in the tools and techniques of the modern armourer's art. Through more than 1,000 detailed photos and clear instruction, Brian Price presents a working handbook for aspiring and active armourers who want to develop their skills in the production of medieval armour in the style of the 14th century. The book is divided into four sections: a sweeping history of armour and its production from its medieval roots to its modern revival; a practical introduction to all the tools and supplies necessary to equip a modern workshop; a thorough review of key techniques; and a series of actual courses in constructing armoured defenses for the head, body, arm, hand and leg. Taking the reader through the construction of an authentic medieval harness from conception to completion, Techniques of Medieval Armour Reproduction is a vital addition to the libraries of serious craftsmen, historians, collectors and researchers.

Encyclopedia Of Mosaic Techniques: A Step-by-step Visual Directory, With An Inspirational Gallery Of Finished Works (Encyclopedia of Art Techniques)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Emma Biggs has used the "Encyclopedia of Mosaic Techniques" to share her wealth of knowledge and experience with us.
It doesn't fit the standard (and effective) format for beginner mosaic books (history, gallery, techniques/materials and projects). In fact there are no projects at all. Instead, the book is broken up into different topics. Here are a few selected at random to show how broad the scope of the book is: "Design Sources" (getting inspiration from tropical fish, fabrics, etc), "Colour in Mosaics", "Workshop Setup", "Cutting Techniques", "Borders", "Central Motifs", "Common Mistakes", "Indirect Method on Paper" (one of the many techniques covered), "Finishing and Fixing" (how to get a professional finish), "Gallery" (finished works with an analysis of what makes each one work, eg use of colour, contrast, light effects, realism).
Because there are no set projects, this is not the easiest book to start with. Unless you're really confident I would recommend Leslie Dierks' "Making Mosaics" instead. However, once you've tried a few of the step-by-step projects in that (or a similar book), this should be your next purchase. It will teach you to create your own projects instead of following someone else's.
The only think I really didn't like about this book is the way the topics were grouped alphabetically instead by theme. I imagine this is the standard for the "Encyclopaedia of..." series, but it doesn't work for me. If you're going through the book sequentially you go from "Double Reverse Method" to "Finishing and Fixing" to "Glass and Silicone" to "Grouting" to "Indirect Method on Paper".
I would have preferred to see all the methods grouped, all the material-related topics grouped, all the design-related topics grouped, etc. But this is a fairly minor niggle given the high quality of the book.
Highly recommended!
