Navaho Weaving: Its Technic And History Review

Navaho Weaving: Its Technic And History

Originally published in 1934, Amsden is considered the basic foundational text by authors writing on the history of Navajo blankets and rugs. While much new and helpful information has been written on Navajo weaving since then, most of these books used Amsden as original source material for much of their information. Pre-1940 Navajo blankets and rugs are among the most collectible artifacts in both the investment and art worlds today. Most all serious Indian art collectors, Native American Indian museum curators and related authors and academics will have a copy of this seminal work in their libraries.
Other recommendations: (1)Photos of antique blankets : "Navajo Textiles" The William Randolph Hearst Collection" by Nancy Blomberg; and (2)"Navajo Weaving Tradition" by Kaufman and Selser is one of the few "in print" books with and overview of the history of Navajo weaving. There is always a need for many more books in this area as so many titles are short run or specialty press issues. (Periodicals: (3) American Indian Art magazine with offices in Scottsdale, AZ publishes a quarterly and often features articles on early weavings.)
(Regarding other critiques of this book ; this is much more a book for collectors and investors and those interested in identifying and understanding the history and development of Navajo weavings and is not a "how to" book for those wishing to "learn to weave". Hobbyist shops have plenty of the latter available.)

David Carr Glover / Technic, Level 3" Review

David Carr Glover / Technic, Level 3

When I ordered this book, the name said "Lessons, Level 3" and the picture actually showed the 'lesson' book, not the 'technic' book. While the Technic book is OK, it's not a substitute for the Lesson book 3. It appears that this picture has been updated, but it is still being called "Lesson, Book 3" in the description. I hope no one else is confused by this as I was.

Theory & Technic for the Young Beginner Primer B Review

Theory and Technic for the Young Beginner Primer B
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My first pick for lesson book (for this age and level), is Bastien Piano Library (traditional) Primer Piano Lessons, Technic Lessons, and Theory Lessons (three orange books), but they are out of print and hard to come by. This is Bastien's 'modern' replacement for the Piano Library series.
It's full color and has great cartoons, but the songs don't sound like songs (not even to 5 year olds). They are repetitive and mundane. The older series does a better job of including familiar folk ditties and tunes into the primer level books so that the student feels like he or she is learning something "cool." In addition, the combination Theory and Technic and division of primer level into two separate primer levels A and B, lengthens the time it takes to learn the material. They do a good job teaching the required theory and technic, in a basic way, but the theory work is mostly dry (not fun) and students don't get enough note spelling work. This sets the stage for future problems if you don't know what you're dealing with.
A mediocre book, all in all- they just don't make things the way they used to! I'll keep ordering my "old" lesson books and waiting 9 weeks for delivery...

The Bastien Piano Basics method is comprised of five completely correlated course books — PIANO, THEORY, PERFORMANCE, TECHNIC, and A LINE A DAY SIGHT READING. Bastien Piano Basics uses a gradual multi-key approach, with reading beginning in the C five-finger position. Five levels of carefully graded lesson material provide constant opportunities for reinforcing basic concepts. It's the smoothest, most heart-warming, most entertaining, most musical way to teach eager youngsters the joys of playing the piano. And comprehensive, page-by-page correlation makes Bastien Piano Basics remarkably easy to teach!

Ballistic Missile Proliferation: The Politics and Technics (Sipri Monographs) Review

Ballistic Missile Proliferation: The Politics and Technics (Sipri Monographs)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mr. Karp's book is a useful primer on key technologies a country must master in order to successfully develop a ballisitc missile. It also contains a wealth of historical anecdotes on the pratfalls and successes of past missile programs from around the world. It is less helpful in its discussions of ballistic missile proliferation politics.
The book is basically divided into three major sections, or themes. The first section, on the politics and driving factors of ballistic missile proliferation, is the weakest section of the book. Many of the author's conclusions seem quite dated and stand in sharp contrast to the findings of several major congressional commissions (e.g., the Deutch report, the Rumsfeld Commission Report, etc.). In this section, Mr. Karp poses the questions "Can missile proliferation be stopped?" and "Does missile proliferation matter?". While he provides an excellent historical discussion, he fails to properly consider the impact that improvements in technology - particularly GPS-aided guidance - have had on proliferation since his book was first written.
The second major section concerns key technologies required for developing a ballistic missile. It is here that the book shines. Mr. Karp breaks the technologies down into what he calls 'soft' and 'hard' technologies. Soft technologies include design criteria, personnel factors, organizational skills, and finance issues. This is one of the few texts that delves into these issues and the author makes a strong case for why these technologies are critical. Hard technologies include propulsion, guidance, re-entry vehicles, stage separation, and flight testing. This book is not a detailed technical work, so if you are looking for a how-to book you'll need to shop elsewhere. However, the author does a very good job providing an overview of each of these areas and providing a wealth of historical anecdotes to illustrate their importance. He also does a very good job of discussing which of these technologies are most prone for proliferation controls and why. My only major criticism of this section is that while GPS is mentioned, it is treated as of minor importance or potential. Clearly current and emerging missile designs would strongly suggest that GPS will have a far larger impact that the book would lead you to believe.
The final section provides a reasonable overview of warhead choices. Considerable attentionis given to chemical, biological, and nuclear warheads. The author does a good job of describing the advantages and disadvantages of each option. Again, this is an overview work not an in-depth technical textbook.
For the student, junior intelligence analyst, or novice decision-maker looking for information on ballistic missile technologies this is a useful primer. The first section is of less value, however if the author updates the book in light of more recent developments, it could prove to be far better.

Working as a support agent for a good number of years you start to pick things. This book points out a lot of the obvious, but goes on to explain why it is the way it is. I have and would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to progress their IT department or have a problem with their IT department. The book talks from high level, so if your looking for a technical manual this isn't your book. Great graduation present for any computer/management major.

Driving a car doesn't require knowledge of cylinder heads and compression ratios, and you don't have to understand software and hardware to make optimum use of Information Technology. It's the people managing and using the technology who are important - not the technology itself - and this is a book about those people, their limitations in coping with technology, and how they can better deal with those limitations. This book is for everyone who is frustrated with Information Technology, and for every non-technical person who is at the mercy of a seemingly uncooperative IT organization. It's for business people who want to better understand IT, and for IT people who want to know why their jobs are so difficult and unappreciated. Every manager, executive and knowledge worker in today's world uses information systems, and most of these people have a relationship - good or bad - with some part of an IT organization. This book gives you the information you need to improve your relationship with IT.
