(More customer reviews)I own 10 manuals of histochemical and histological technique. I use this one 4 times as often as the other nine together. Kiernan describes most useful techniques well. His own neurological technique is unbeatable. He discusses dye chemistry thoroughly, and discusses staining mechanisms well. On top of all this, the book is an incredible bargain at [money] for the paperback.

The relations of chemical structures and reactions to fixation, tissue processing, staining, enzyme location, immunohistochemistry and other procedures are explained in simple, descriptive terms. As well as being a textbook, further references and more detailed information is available for those who wish to study a topic in more depth. For this new edition the author has updated the text with the latest techniques and developments within the field, whilst retaining the details of the classic techniques still in use.

Basic Surgical Techniques Review

(More customer reviews)When I was a medical student, I was frustrated by the lack of a good source for learning the things that I somehow seemed to be expected to know on the first day of my surgery rotation, in particular how to tie good knots of an appropriate type, reliably, quickly, and almost automatically.
This wonderful little book fit the bill admirably. Several of my friends at other medical schools subsequent bought it and thanked me for the tip.

(More customer reviews)I was surprised to find that the book was only 40 pages long. The illustrations are good and the information is presented in a concise and efficient manner. The book covers roughly 8 types of knots and 9 different suturing methods. So obviously it is ideal for someone looking to get a quick hands-on start on basic suturing.[update 4-5-07] I think I may have underestimated this book. It is actually a nice and concise primer that I have referenced again and again. It is small enough to fit in a white coat or lab jacket pocket. Here is a summarized Table of Contents: One and two-handed square knot, Instrument tie square knot, Miller's and Modified Miller's knot; Suture materials, needles, methods, and patterns(appositional, tension, and inverting); Removing sutures and Basic Sterile Technique.

The book is roughly 220 pages and has 11 categories of disorders with algorithms under each for either common symptoms or abnormal lab values. The algorithms are very easy to follow, uncluttered, and lead you to a list of differential diagnosis. At each branch of the algorithm reference numbers allow you to read commentary.Only the most common medical diagnoses are in the book, requiring you to search other material for any rare ailment. Also, unless a treatment aids in the differentiating process, the book does not give standard treatments.
