Now gently curl your middle finger back under your hand so that your hand will be slightly raised yet supported by your tucked under middle finger. Your thumb, index finger, ring finger and pinky should be extended outward and spread evenly. Raise up only your thumb. NO PROBLEM. Next your pinky..., now your index finger. Finally your ring finger. BIG PROBLEM. As a piano player your ring finger is by far your weak link in developing technical dexterity. This book with it's exercises changes that! A must for anyone wishing to become a serious player. And don't forget book two of this series! Practice on!

The children love the songs because they are easy to play, recognizable, while some are original and they can also sing along while they play. (More customer reviews)If you are a new to the piano or are getting your kids into playing the piano, this book is NOT for you. The authors start with very little definition of terms and notes and when they do are very unclear what to do with the information. Plus, the songs they give, which seem like nice songs are way too hard for any level 1 student to even come close to playing. If the piano student has a qualified teacher in music to accompany the book, it may be a good buy, otherwise it's teaching methods for self learning are far out of date.

David Carr Glover Method for Piano: Lessons, Primer" Review

(More customer reviews)I grew up using David Carr Glover books when I took piano lessons myself. I still love them for the simplicity and ease of use. I like the way this method book does NOT start on the black keys. It starts right in with real notes in middle C position. This way the students learn the notes and what they look like on the staff. Other methods use the black keys and finger numbers--children end up relying on the finger numbers instead of on what NOTE they're supposed to be playing.
I highly recommend the Glover method--I would also recommend if you use this book to add the Primer level Technic, Performance and Theory books for a well-rounded experience.

I have really enjoyed learning and playing the songs in the book and they have inspired me to seek out other works by some of the composers as well. Each piece is plenty challenging to give something to work toward, while at the same time being fun and rewarding to play. Great book for early intermediate pianists.

Lhevinne spares no effort to decorate his book with extensive excerpts by famous composers, mainly Chopin, Rubinstein, Liszt and Schumann. A recommended read for all pianists and anyone who enjoys listening to this great instrument. The book is relevant to all pianists regardless of level.

Bastien Piano Basics: Piano Primer Level (Primer Level, WP 200) Review

(More customer reviews)This is one of many books in a series for the 7-11 year old beginner. My daughter just started lessons, and her teacher required us to buy all the books in the series. There are 5 levels; this is one from the first level to be used along with Theory WP205, Performance WP210, and Technic WP 215. These books are half size, this one being 63 pages of very basic kid songs(such as Skip To My Lou). The advantage that I see to these particular books is that thay are very self explanatory, along with pictures of how to hold the hands, etc. and would enable a parent to teach piano and reading music, etc. without prior knowledge or without the expensive piano teacher. The disadvantages that I see are that these books are not particularly creative( is it possible to be creative at this stage of learning the basics?) and that it looks like we will be through this 1st series within a month. With 4 to 5 new books in each series this could be a tidy little financial investment. Also, much as I love Amazon, the books were the same price at my local music store minus the special order fee, because they were already in stock. By the way, my 9 year old says she likes the books a lot.

Fingerpower Level One: Effective Technic for All Piano Methods Review

(More customer reviews)This is a product for those who believe in traditional piano teaching methods, not the modern methods where students learn to play songs quickly but fail to really learn to read music or proper technique. I used this product in the 70's and am now purchasing it for my young sons. I can't tell you that it's fun, but it is effective in teaching proper technique, building finger strength, and ensuring proper development in both hands. This is like sending your hands to the gym for a piano workout. To balance out this effective-but-not-fun program, I'll also purchase the Pointer system books for my kids. That system teaches chord theory but it is fun, useful if you want to play guitar later, and the songs sound really cool for the younger student. John Thompson (from the 30's) provides the foundation for their learning, and then we will move over to Schaum after the 1st grade book. The point here is that Fingerpower should not be used alone, but rather to supplement your regular piano program, and I'd recommend finding an additional system like Pointer to help keep the learning process fun.
