LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Hacker's Guide Review

LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Hacker's Guide

I was GREATLY disappointed, for the following reasons:
1) Most of the hacks in this book are lame. (Sorry, a board game using Lego pieces does NOT count as a hack).
2) There's very little in this book about the Mindstorms NXT. The first 79 pages of the book don't address the NXT at all, and the rest of the book only addresses the NXT tangentially, in most cases using only five or six NXT parts to build the hack. (Some hacks don't use NXT parts at all).
3) The book seems to have had a "first-to-market" strategy, in order to make a quick buck and to take advantage of the interest surrounding the NXT.
Rock-bottom message: it's a slapdash, hodgepodge assortment of stuff that will not advance your knowledge of the NXT one iota.
Save your cash and get another book.

Ulysses on the Liffey Review

Ulysses on the Liffey

"Ulysses on the Liffey" is not the first book on "Ulysses" I'd reach for. That would be "'Ulysses' Annotated." But, Ellmann's views on Joyce's masterpiece are extremely valuable to those who've read Joyce, and more than once. Like Lang in his "Music of Western Civilization," Ellmann says much in little space. I'd say a top 10 book on "Ulysses," all told.

April 6, 2009: I worked with L.S Heatherly for over 11 years preparing the manuscript for this book. I, having a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Psychology, want to quote (with his permission) Darryl House because his comments reflect precisely my opinion of the book:
"THE LAST HUMAN SPRING is an absorbing, enlightening, and fascinating work. The ideas are as important as any I've ever read or studied. This is an amazing philosopher. I dare say that his work may become as important as any by Darwin or B. F. Skinner. This book has had a profound influence on my interpretation of the human condition; and I am committed to getting it into the minds and hands of the world. Bless [Heatherly's] soul for forming these ideas and publishing them." -- Darrly House, Magalia California, USA

A ground-breaking work on nature and humanity. This book deepens the spirit of Silent Spring, and of Walden--into human conservation and healing. It reveals the stunning breakthrough into Nurturome. It breaks open, then completes our view of evolution; it reveals the Second Missing Link. It redefines and redirects the Environmental Movement--the nature-human debate. It dispels the issue of nature vs. culture, and other key myths of 'civilization', Modernism, and Postmodernism. It reveals the Origin and Emergence of Alien Being--Alienism. It presents the Revelation of Selflifeworld. It reveals the Origins of Egoself that comes to displace whole self and whole mind. Over one hundred-fifty subheadings mark more surprises on the journey! A vast pot-pourri for laymen, professionals, and students! From The Critics Midwest Book Review The Last Human Spring provides a philosophy of the nature-human world and its interactions, from concepts of evolution and astronomical history to reflections on concepts of aliens, human alliances with and struggles over nature, and visions of how humanity interacts with the environment. An intiguing survey of human life and meaning. Journal of Environmental Education - --Richard R. Jurin The author, L. S. Heatherly, has done an admirable job of orchestrating a mind-expanding series of short essays ...convincing and thought-provoking ideas ...that show the reader how ...and why[our]separation from nature began ...and continues to exist. In an account similar to Daniel Quinn's Ishmael ideas,...he convincingly debunks many of the great myths that drive our modern human thinking ...and shows how ...only through civilization have [humans] achieved a disconnect [from nature] ...highly readable ...adult readers can [opt to] read in short sections ...suited to a high school or college audience with a good teacher or instructor ...[a] wonderful and uplifting [treatise] of a new spiritual redemption to be used in general environmental education studies [despite] a negative vision of the future ... What People Are Saying It is an amazing book, truly ground-breaking,...I respect and acknowledge [the] vision,...I hope [the] book is widely read. --Pulitzer Prize-winning Author, Human Rights Leader, Ecoleader, and Poet Laureate of the Environmental Movement Correct - Gary Snyder I commend [the Author] on the diligence of [his] investigation ...engaged in what Thomas Berry calls the 'great work' of restiring harmony between humans and the rest of nature. --Author of Simple in Means, Rich in Ends: Practicing Deep Ecology - Bill Devall

Biochemical Tests for Identification of Medical Bacteria Review

Biochemical Tests for Identification of Medical Bacteria
Average Reviews:

The contents of this edition is very complete and detailed explaining much of the rational behind most of the commonly used tests to differentiate bacteria. It would be a very valuable reference for instructors to use for the majors microbiology courses as well as graduate and medical microbiology courses. It would especially be valuable as a reference in any clinical microbiology laboratory, food, or environmental reference microbiology laboratory.

A Technique for Producing Ideas (Advertising Age Classics Library) Review

A Technique for Producing Ideas (Advertising Age Classics Library)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am not an advertising professional but in the profession of scientific research. Yet this book (which was written in the 1940s for advertising people) is just as relevant to my work as it is to anyone else who is a knowledge worker. This little book is one of the simplest summaries of commonsense---and articulating common sense is this book's greatest virtue. The book lays out a five step process for generating novel and not-so-novel ideas, articulating them, and giving them a life of their own. There are no examples, no case studies, just crisply articulated common-sense that you can put to immediate use. Everything that he says is stuff that you likely already know, so this is not one of those books that talks the lofty talk about "retraining your mind" and such obscure, undoable things. The idea in this book that most resonated with me was his comment that novel ideas are simply unusual connections among things that already exist and you might already know. The book takes about an hour to read from cover to cover (and I'm not even a fast reader).
Although Mr. Bernbach probably never intended this book for consumers like me in the scientific research profession, I'd bet my money that this little gem might be just as "duh" or "aha"-evoking to people in any other knowledge-intensive line of white-collar work. The only note of caution: This book was originally written in the 1940s and the gender bias ("the creative man," "he") is pervasive throughout its 48 pages.
If you are in a profession where your "wealth" is measured in intellectual output, this is some of the best seven dollars you can invest in your education. Highly recommended for anyone whose profession requires novelty, new ideas, and creativity. Buy---don't borrow--read, reread, and dog ear this little gem!

Rise of The West Review

Rise of The West
Average Reviews:

I have been hoping to see this for some time.
A very succinct and lucid account of a contemporary view on Western Culture, its legacy, and its future prospects in a changing world. The Author has been a stalwart proponent for those individuals who have been denied the future envisioned by their ancestors for many years; this certainly is an effort which commands the attention of those who wish to understand the panorama of events which have modified our Life in today's America and the far-flung colonies of the West.
The Author makes no bones about the direction which our present day 'leaders' have taken us; he asks the reader candid and serious questions about where we are to go as a Western People, and just what are the real issues of the day facing Western Man and Woman.
The Author covers history, science, and politics of the racial variety, and bases this upon the Natural Law of the specie; he does not weigh down the reader with too many dates and numbers but, rather, he paints a tapestry of knowledge for each reader.
This work, surprisingly, can be read by many different peoples; each can, in my mind, come away with some facet of knowledge and truth for their own 'folk', whoever that may be. It is, nevertheless, written for those of Western stock, the inheritors of the West, as it was intended to be.
Instead of bemoaning the 'decline of the West', this Author believes in, and promotes the 'rising of a New West', fulfilling the destiny of ten-thousand generations of hope and desire.
I, for one, am proud to own this work, and will pass it on.

This is a New Format and New Cover, Amended:Rise of the West is an epistemology of those things dearest to the Nationalist: his past, his spirit, his blood, his technics and, most important, his Future. With so many of Western man's life-force being denied him, and the vestiges of what was hard-won now being methodically, and irrevocably lost to the machinations of what the Author calls, the Modern, the Rise of the West seeks to walk the reader through racial, and more specifically, [our] american racial history, in a way which both elucidates, and becomes an intellectual primer for the values, mores, and concepts which are best expressed as Race-Culture, that which becomes our "will to express" and the very extension of our need to survive, and survive intact, maintaining the legacy of Life left to us by our Mothers and Fathers.
