Bridal Couture: Fine Sewing Techniques for Wedding Gowns and Evening Wear Review

Bridal Couture: Fine Sewing Techniques for Wedding Gowns and Evening Wear

I bought this book never having heard of the author before. I was fairly "blown away" by the high quality of the information offered, the wonderful works shown and the fact that this author obviously cares about those who will use her book. She provides her readers with some of the best, complete and accurate information I have ever seen written in a book. The reader (in this case me) knows that she/he is being provided with information of the highest standard, the author doesn't withhold important facts and obviously loves what she does as seen in the quality work she produces. Sewing from the soul.
I don't do Bridal Sewing but am interested in Couture Sewing. This book is one of the finest on the subject. I highly recommend it.

All About Techniques in Drawing for Animation Production Review

All About Techniques in Drawing for Animation Production

As an animation artist, I am familiar with the author's work and eagerly awaited the arrival of this book. It did not disappoint!
It is good for beginners and seasoned veterans alike. The sequential animation drawings - along with their respective numberings and spacing charts - are worth more than the price of the book. They are an excellent way for the student of animation to see how the drawings are spaced to provide the true 'spark of life' so necessary in the success of the animated image 'coming alive'. The book ranks up there with the Preston Blair books, Thomas and Johnston's ILLUSION OF LIFE, and Richard William's THE
ANIMATOR'S SURVIVAL KIT. The chapters on Storyboarding, Layout and Background, along with many other animation gems, are there as well. A true tour de force!

Ninja Hacking: Unconventional Penetration Testing Tactics and Techniques Review

Ninja Hacking: Unconventional Penetration Testing Tactics and Techniques
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Without turning into a how-to manual, Wilhelm and Andress do a good job exposing the reader to the world of the Ninja and then mapping the cutting-edge skills of the leaders in penetration testing to those of the Zukin (the penetration tester who leverages unorthodox techniques). A good mix of history and hacking ensures even those who have no interest in the historical aspect will still get ideas for how to take penetration tests to the next level. This reference is broad enough to inspire almost everyone, but that breadth comes at the cost of not being deep enough to allow for expert mastery of any of the individual skills. By the end of this book the reader should know how to become the Ninja penetration tester and should be able to intelligently discuss the relationship between the feudal Ninja to the Ninjas of today.
The book is peppered with historical parables designed to shed light on modern security scenarios and stoke interest in the material. These scenarios may make explanation of aspects of penetration testing easier to understand for non-pentesters, and they should make experienced security experts think. The book covers a broad range of concepts, from contrasting the philosophies of the Ninja and Samurai classes using stories about specific feudal lords and clan leaders to examining the rules of engagement according to Sun Tzu's Art of War. Throughout, these researched components are not only used to examine concepts of penetration and defense but also to question the cookie-cutter methodologies found in many penetration tests. However, those who aren't interested in Ninjas can skip the first 2 chapters and go directly into the chapters about stealth and misdirection and will still be able to understand the references in most of the book.
By examining penetration testing using a point of view which is not bound by the traditional rules of war, Wilhelm and Andress are able to examine what sets apart traditional penetration testers from the leaders in the field. The authors do not focus on explicit programs or tools which grant the latter an advantage. Rather, they explain how the Zukin can achieve better results than a traditional penetration tester. Approaching a problem from the mindset of an intruder who wants to obtain access without being detected changes the field of play for penetration tests in significant ways that this book is not afraid to explore. Modern techniques for advanced information gathering, social engineering, misdirection, and even sabotage are defined as extensions of the Ninja philosophy for covert and open operational tactics. Discussion of disguise, impersonation, surveillance and social engineering begins with exploration of how these techniques were leveraged by the feudal warriors.
Overall, Ninja Hacking has excellent relevant material and a significant amount of Ninja lore and history. While this book is not a technical reference, it is an excellent choice for someone who has an interest in Ninjas or someone who is looking for inspiration to think differently about penetration testing and security concepts. The mappings for traditional Ninja skills to the skills of today are mostly well-coupled and are always relevant to how the leaders in the field are addressing security today.

Recording Music on Location Review

Recording Music on Location

I bought this book new because it's unique in being about live recording. I've been recording and mixing live CDs for several years and I picked up a few pointers from this book. A lot of it comes across as common sense and I ended up skimming through the book to parts I found interesting.
It all depends on where you are on the live recording journey and what kind of advice you are looking for. If you're considering getting into this gig or you're still pretty new, this book should be a nice first-hand experience testimonial to some of the challenges involved in live recording. If you have several years experience under your belt, you'll be asking yourself why you didn't write this book.

The Technique of Motor Racing (Driving) Review

The Technique of Motor Racing
by Piero Taruffi
Aloha,
Thirty years ago I was a driver for the "Jim Russell International Racing Driving School" out at Willow Springs, CA USA. One of the greatest times in my life. Jim Russell (JRS) at that time had schools simultaneously on five continents. We taught in so many languages that we did not have a textbook of our own. JRS was busy training movie stars and World Champions for Formula One Race Car Driving. JRS put students in single seaters from day one! We use to order Taruffi's by the case. It had been "The Book!" for over ten years and was very hard to find. I think Harry Morrow would get them for us from England. They would sell out every time. We could not keep them on the shelf.
I use the principles I learned every time I take to the road. I believe it has helped make me a safer and definitely faster better Motor Vehicle Driver. Probably contributed to my long life, considering I am in the habit of winning on or off the track.
For decades I did not see Taruffi at all. Sometimes I would pick them up in old bookstores. I am glad for the sake of all future drivers that someone has had the wisdom to keep Taruffi in publication. Just the fact that it is around after all these years should tell you something.
Even today, you will seldom see them sold used. You will never see them sold cheap. Many driving books are about the author. Some are about street driving. Taruffi is pure Racing!! How you can drive a car faster. The essence of driving. I do not see how things could have changed enough to invalidate anything Taruffi has had to say. Decide for yourself, you can always return it.
If you have read every book on Motor Racing ever published. You will find The Technique of Motor Racing not only has a lot to offer you. It may just be the most compact bit of Racing Knowledge you have ever found in one place.
Pass Um`
