All About Techniques in Drawing (All about Techniques: Art) Review

All About Techniques in Drawing (All about Techniques: Art)

I purchased this book because it provides a quick and dirty run down of the different forms of media one can use to draw a picture. In the first section of the book, it talks about the tools you can use: graphite, colored pencils, pastels, ink, markers, charcoal and sanguine-just to name a few. It also tells you what type of paper goes best with each drawing material as well as the type of eraser is best to use. There is a section value and modeling, as well. The next couple of the sections deal with techiques that are specific to each medium. For example, coloring by strokes and blending charcoal and pastels with fingers and stumping pencils. In the sections on techniques, step-by-step exercises are provided to demonstrate how the author got from a blank sheet of paper to a replication of a famous work of art done in that same medium. However, during the demonstrations (I assume in the interests of brevity and page space)he may skip a little too much. This may not bother some people, but I'm a "I follow the recipie to the letter" type of person when it comes to something I don't know how to do. In spite of that I still rate this book 5 stars for several reasons: I like they way they show you pictures of the tools and tell you what they are and how to use them (for example, my high school art teacher said under no circumstances to smudge with my fingers for shading--he mainly said to crosshatch. As a result, I had no idea what a stumping pencil was and that my fingers were capable of such nice smudging.) Secondly, I like the way the book mentions some of the top brands for different media and shows what some of these sets look like. And thirdly, despite the flaw in the exercises, it was still fascinating to see the transformation. (I haven't done one to completion as I've only had the book for two weeks and I wanted to read through it first.) After reading the book, I know what materials I need to get started and I have a manual to help me practice.
I've always been pretty good at basic to intermediate graphite sketches and I wanted to take my drawings to the next level. If you're a beginner or an advanced beginner, then this book will probably help you. If everything I have written here is old hat to you, then you should probably look for something more advanced. As I said this book is a quick and dirty break-down of different drawing media and their techinques. It does not attempt to give in depth information on all media and the techniques associated with them.

Computer Animation: Algorithms and Techniques (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics) Review

Computer Animation: Algorithms and Techniques (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is not about how to accomplish animation using prepackaged software nor is it about art design for animation. Instead, it is aimed at computer science students who wish to write programs that perform animation and want to understand the algorithmic and mathematical issues behind that task.
Chapter one is a broad history of computer animation, and it would be misleading to think that this is a typical chapter in this book. Chapter 2 is a broad overview of computer graphics topics. It mentions quaternions, transformation matrices, the rendering pipeline, and I think it is meant to be a quick review more than an instructive chapter. If you are not already familiar with the material in chapter 2 this book will be over your head.
Chapters 3 through 6 are the meat of the book for those interested in computer animation algorithms. Chapter 3 presents low level details on interpolation and not only shows the math but also shows code fragments in C on how to accomplish some of the tasks mentioned. Chapter four presents more advanced algorithms such as camera control, kinematic modeling, rigid body simulation, flocking behavior, and collision detection. Again in this chapter mathematics of the algorithms is presented along side of C code to accomplish the tasks.
Chapter 5 changes topics from the discussion of object motion and the underlying physics to the topic of natural phenomena. The author does a good job of laying out clearly the basics of the mathematics behind these effects. However, he does seem to gloss over details more than he did in previous chapters. The same is true of Chapter 6 on the modeling and animation of articulated figures. The basics are all there, but there just wasn't enough detail to satisfy me.
As for the companion website, it is working at the time I am writing this review. However, the problem I have with books that have companion sites in place of an accompanying CD is that over time these websites are usually neglected and at worst, disconnected. However, an accompanying CD is always shipped with a new book.
Overall, this book is the best compromise I've found between accessible and comprehensive on this subject, and I would recommend it to anyone thinking about writing their own computer animation code.

Granted, some of the instruction is uninspired and done better in one of the countless other drawing books on the market. But each of the contributing authors gives a quick run-down of some pretty solid techniques for general drawing practice.
Think of it as a "Greatest Hits Sampler" of drawing books.

Architectural Rendering Techniques: A Color Reference Review

Architectural Rendering Techniques: A Color Reference

I just want to emphasize to someone interested in purchasing this book...there is NO verbal technique given on how to render any drawings. There is a drawing only...with a description of paper, medium, etc...but no "how to" on reproducing it. I am a professional artist and I was hoping to learn from this book how someone else might create a drawing with certian papers, paints, etc....but, there is no information of the steps taken...just the end result.

The book shows the basic steps using the new available materials for industrial designers to use. I have known the book from a friend and tried to buy one for myself in the Philippines but it seems fast gone from bookstores. Since I love the classic and manual rendering before I use the computer, I found the book so informative that I learned to improvise and develop my own style of rendering. It helped me focus on the concept better because I have gained confidence in handling rendering materials and the basic understanding of light and shadow play on different textures.

Fast Sketching Techniques: Capture the Fundamental Essence of Elusive Subjects Review

Fast Sketching Techniques: Capture the Fundamental Essence of Elusive Subjects
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With the exception of the old courtroom sketch artists, rarely do you see someone standing or sitting with just a pad and a few pencils trying for a likeness of something. Most people reach in their pocket, pull out an autofocus 35mm camera and snap a picture. Anyone can sketch with some degree of success. David Rankin shows you his techniques which rely on speed, basic shapes and dramatic shading. Whether your subject is a landmark building, your seven year old neice, or a peacock at the local zoo, this book will show you easily how to capture the image in a few brief strokes. The rewards are endless. If you are an accomplished artist, the sketches will be invaluable to you back in the studio for reference in creating full blown art pieces. If you are just looking for a way to record scenes for your own edification, you will have some dramatic fast renderings that reflect a mood, something a camera simply can not do. I love this book.

As an animation artist, I am familiar with the author's work and eagerly awaited the arrival of this book. It did not disappoint!
It is good for beginners and seasoned veterans alike. The sequential animation drawings - along with their respective numberings and spacing charts - are worth more than the price of the book. They are an excellent way for the student of animation to see how the drawings are spaced to provide the true 'spark of life' so necessary in the success of the animated image 'coming alive'. The book ranks up there with the Preston Blair books, Thomas and Johnston's ILLUSION OF LIFE, and Richard William's THE
ANIMATOR'S SURVIVAL KIT. The chapters on Storyboarding, Layout and Background, along with many other animation gems, are there as well. A true tour de force!

Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers, 2nd Edition Review

Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

OK, I will be honest. I have the older edition. It's got some campy early 80's scenes in it, but I found it essential in understanding how color hits building materials. If you are an architect or architectural student, you will need this book so that you can put some life into your drawings. If you are just an amateur like me, you still need this book.
Learning how to draw using Doyle's techniques is useful for travel diaries, sketching, and so on. Since you are using color markers and pencils and blending the colors, you get a kind of richness and depth in drawings that don't come from just one medium alone. Also, the media (markers and pencils) are dry and won't spill in your backpack or attache when hauling it around places to do sketches and so on. (I took a mess of pencils and markers to Europe and it was easier to deal with than the trip I took after, where my watercolor paint froze on the travel diary!)
I'm gonna put the latest edition on my wish list and hope Santa is good to me this season :-)

Digital Drawing for Landscape Architecture: Contemporary Techniques and Tools for Digital Representation in Site Design Review

Digital Drawing for Landscape Architecture: Contemporary Techniques and Tools for Digital Representation in Site Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bradley Cantrell and Wes Michaels have authored a concise and beautifully illustrated book. They know their stuff and it shows. The book presents a detailed overview of digital methods, graphics and tools used in landscape architecture and related design professions. The clearly written content encompasses varying software and graphic. The images are excellent representatives of the graphics and methods the book's content advocates.
The book focuses on the creation of graphics type and not just on specific graphic programs. The authors took into account the flexibility in which many designers create representative graphics. This smart approach allows the book to center on the creation of rich representations of the landscape, but still delve in to the specifics of the programs used by design students and professionals.
Each chapter and section demonstrates varying techniques. From using Photoshop to create sections and plan graphics, to scaling and working with aerials. The authors demonstrate how to integrate CAD with Adobe Illustrator in an easy but important workflow. The book reviews a variety of 3D modeling programs including 3D Max and SketchUp and the type of graphics these programs can generate. One favorite chapter includes a step-by-step tutorial on creating Photoshop Perspective Collage. And this is just a sampling of what the book contains. The comprehensive nature of the book is phenomenal.
The authors move the discussion beyond just `how to' and discuss digital theory. Of particular note is a dialogue on how current digital methods are directly informed by the tradition of ink, pen and paper which was the backbone of graphic representation for decades. Framing the book's methods in the long tradition of hand-drawn illustrations emphasizes why design practitioners must read and use this book; it's a milestone in bringing the design community up to date to the level that design should be represented and practiced.
The book's approach and theories on digital presentation will elevate professionals and students practicing landscape architecture and related fields.

I'm thrilled that I finally have a book that tells how to digitally as well as manually color architectural and landscape drawings. It gives tips on using a scanner to get drawings or photographs into a layer of Photoshop and then how to manipulate the layers including opacity and filters. The technics for using markers and colored pencils to achieve realistic wood, rocks, leaves, water, and chrome are outstanding. Includes great tips on paper colors, and what to include or leave out of a drawing to give it visual punch. The entire 414 pages are drawings and tips specifically dedicated to the needs of architects, landscape architects, and interior designers though any graphic person would find tremendous value in this book.

Pencil Drawing Techniques Review

Pencil Drawing Techniques
Average Reviews:

Hi all. I draw as a hobby and have been drawing since I was a about 10. I took drawing classes before, but when I look at my previous artwork, they really don't have the "realism" that I wanted, i.e. they look too much like cartoons. I wandered around and tried looking for some books to teach me how to obtained that photo-realistic quality with a pencil.
Flipping through this book, my jaw dropped in amazement at the examples in this book. Near the end, the illustrations of zoo animals (tigers, horses, etc) were so life-like! The artist really know how to shade. I instantly brought the book.
Let me tell you, this book is very complex and loaded with information. There are lots of text for an art book. First, the book goes over the basics of shapes and different shades of pencil lead (from hard 6H to very soft 8B, the "#2 pencil" is near the middle). Then we go over shading. The book is primarily focusing on different shading and strokes techniques in order to get that "life-like" realism in your drawing. In my personal experience, trying to obtain that level takes many hours and many practice. If you are the type who gives up easily, then this book isn't for you. Nobody said drawing is easy. Or, if you are only interested in drawing nice line-arts (and letting a computer do the rest), then this book is NOT for you as well. However, if you want to draw to the highest realism with just a pencil, then this book is worth considering.
I should also mention that a small chapter is devoted to color pencils (whereas the rest, or 90% of the book, is on graphite pencil), but I haven't bother with color yet.

Here is a really good book for the artist who wants to develop his or her pencil drawing abilities, whether it's to improve your preliminary sketch work, or to create beautiful pencil drawings complete in their own right. Pencil Drawing Techniques brings together six of today's best artists, all of whom are incredibly fine instructors as well. The artists show you how to develop your skill and ability in handling pencil technique. Ferdinand Petrie shows you how to handle pencils and produce a controlled variety of lines, values, and textures. Then he shows you exactly how to use these techniques to draw landscapes in a range of styles and compositions.Rudy De Reyna explains pencil basics, and explores perspective, size relationships, form, and structure. Douglas grave teaches you how to begin drawing portraits by building a drawing step-by-step. Norman Dams and Joe Singer demonstrate how you can use the pencil to produce spectacular drawings of animals. John Blockley and Richard Bolton show you how pencil drawings can capture the essence of a subject and help you work out a plan for painting it. Finally, Bet Borgeson teaches you all the secrets of colored pencil work and demonstrates a whole new dimension. The book is divided into seven sections: how to handle a pencil, fundamentals of drawing, drawing landscapes, drawing portraits, drawing animals, drawing for watercolors, and handling color pencils. The copious illustrations show in detail how the artists use their techniques. For the artist who uses the pencil, Pencil Drawing Techniques is an an excellent instructional book of ideas for using the pencil creatively.
