CNC Programming Techniques: An Insider's Guide to Effective Methods and Applications Review

CNC Programming Techniques: An Insider's Guide to Effective Methods and Applications

This handbook by Smid on the subject of CNC programming tackles the subject from a different angle than his bestselling "CNC Programming Handbook". That book is a more basic one aimed at beginners. This book is more advanced and contains several programming subjects that are very difficult to find either in other books or on the web. Even where there is overlap with the author's "CNC Programming Guide", this book provides much more depth of coverage on various subjects than that book does. As is standard with this author, this book includes many clear detailed drawings that greatly assist in visualizing the procedures covered. Whenever applicable, a complete programming example is provided. Equations and all tools used in each example are boxed and clearly labeled. As always, this author's instructions and explanations are clear and detailed. I show the table of contents next as the best way of explaining the book's contents:
1. Part Program Development
2. Calculating Contour Points
3. Formulas for Contouring
4. Using Cutter Radius Offset
5. Part Reversal in Milling
6. Using Tapered End Mills
7. Special Purpose G-COdes
8. Tool Length Offset Change
9. Block Skip Applications
10. Standard and Rigid Tapping
11. Polar Coordinates
12. Subprogram Development
13. Turning and Boring in Depth
14. Programming Tapers
15. Techniques for Grooving
16. Techniques for Threading
17. Restrictions in Threading
18. Practical Thread Milling
19. Knurling on CNC Lathes
20. Four-Axis Lthes
21. Pallet Changers
22. Working With Planes
23. Programming CAMs
24. Introduction to Macros
25. Did You Know That?
26. References and Resources

This book is just fantastic. Starts out with the basics for building strong stable robots, and moves on to more complex ideas. Great examples of robots throughout the book which will provide ideas for building your own masterpiece.
It doesn't have step by step instructions, and is more of an ideas book for NXT enthusiasts.
I'd recommend this for your home or Robotics club library.

This book is excellent in almost every respect.
It does a great job of introducing the reader to the LDraw suite of tool for making LEGO creations on your computer. Though this book is geared toward beginners, it is also a great tool for those intermediate users looking to expand their LDraw horizons. I especially liked the sections on creating building instructions. Additionally, all the reference sections make this book worthwhile for even the seasoned LDrawer; I loved the visual color reference on the inside front cover. This book would make a fine addition to any LEGO enthusiasts library.

The LEGO Book Review

The LEGO Book

I pre-ordered this set for my 12 yr old son. I received it yesterday and I must say I am quite pleased with the set. I found myself thoroughly enjoying the colorful pages and skimming over all the mini figures and sets that have evolved over the decades. Viewing the pages provided a bit of nostalgia for me as I was able to share my own memories with my son. This set is great for the Lego Collector or enthusiast. I really enjoyed the overview of the history of Lego along with the timelines and descriptions of manufacturing, etc.
If you are looking for "building tips" or "an idea book" this is not the book for you, instead I would look into the purchase of: "The Unofficial Lego Builder's Guide" by Allan Bedford, or the DK Lego Modelers series that have booklets containing ways to create characters using common lego pieces that you may already have in your collection.

Bastien Piano Basics: Piano Primer Level (Primer Level, WP 200) Review

Bastien Piano Basics: Piano Primer Level (Primer Level, WP 200)

This is one of many books in a series for the 7-11 year old beginner. My daughter just started lessons, and her teacher required us to buy all the books in the series. There are 5 levels; this is one from the first level to be used along with Theory WP205, Performance WP210, and Technic WP 215. These books are half size, this one being 63 pages of very basic kid songs(such as Skip To My Lou). The advantage that I see to these particular books is that thay are very self explanatory, along with pictures of how to hold the hands, etc. and would enable a parent to teach piano and reading music, etc. without prior knowledge or without the expensive piano teacher. The disadvantages that I see are that these books are not particularly creative( is it possible to be creative at this stage of learning the basics?) and that it looks like we will be through this 1st series within a month. With 4 to 5 new books in each series this could be a tidy little financial investment. Also, much as I love Amazon, the books were the same price at my local music store minus the special order fee, because they were already in stock. By the way, my 9 year old says she likes the books a lot.

I found this book to be an excellant survey of the history and philosophy of technology. It replaces a multitude of other texts.

What does it mean to think about technology philosophically? Why try? These are the issues that Carl Mitcham addresses in this work, a comprehensive, critical introduction to the philosophy of technology and a discussion of its sources and uses.Tracing the changing meaning of "technology" from ancient times to our own, Mitcham identifies the most important traditions of critical analysis of technology: the engineering approach, which assumes the centrality of technology in human life; and the humanities approach, which is concerned with its moral and cultural boundaries.Mitcham bridges these two traditions through an analysis of discussions of engineering design, of the distinction between tools and machines, and of engineering science itself. He looks at technology as it is experienced in everyday life—as material objects (from kitchenware to computers), as knowledge ( including recipes, rules, theories, and intuitive "know-how"), as activity (design, construction, and use), and as volition (knowing how to use technology and understanding its consequences). By elucidating these multiple aspects, Mitcham establishes criteria for a more comprehensive analysis of ethical issues in applications of science and technology. This book will guide anyone wanting to reflect on technology and its moral implications.

This is the training manual for the Data Modeling Master Class that Steve Hoberman teaches onsite and through public classes. This text can be purchased prior to attending the Master Class, the latest course schedule and detailed description can be found on Steve Hoberman`s website.
The Master Class is a complete course on data modeling, containing four days of practical techniques for producing solid relational and dimensional data models. After learning modeling concepts and terms, you will apply a best practices approach to building and validating data models through the Data Model Scorecard™. You will learn not just how to build a data model, but also how to build a data model well. Challenging exercises and workshops will reinforce the material and enable you to apply these techniques in your current projects.
Steve is an excellent presenter, keeping his audience engaged while covering in-depth relational and dimensional modeling techniques. His entertaining style combined with his many real world examples and exercises, held our interest throughout the course. S. DeCandia, Pfizer Global Manufacturing
In my long professional career, I have participated in many training seminars but I have never encountered a class in which the subject had been so thoroughly considered and presented in such a clear and engaging manor. As a fairly new, but full time data modeler, I expect to use the things that I learned in this class every day. My only regret is that the class had to end. G. Schmid, Travelers Insurance
This was the most comprehensive, informative, energetic, interesting and just plain FUN class I have ever taken on the subject of Data Modeling. G. Werner, Long Island Railroad
Part 1: Modeling Basics Assuming no prior knowledge of data modeling, we will begin this section with an entertaining exercise that will illustrate an important gap filled by data models. Next, we will explain data modeling concepts and terminology. We will also explore each component on a data model and practice reading business rules.
Part 2: Overview to the Data Model Scorecard™The Scorecard is a set of ten categories for validating a data model. We will explore best practices from the perspectives of both the modeler and reviewer, and you will be provided with a template to use on your current projects.
Part 3: Understanding subject area, logical, and physical data modelsThe subject area model captures a business need within a well-defined scope; the logical data model captures an application-independent business solution; and the physical data model captures the technical solution by focusing on factors such as performance and security.
Part 4: Ensuring the model captures the requirementsWe will focus on techniques such as the use of spreadsheets and business assertions to ensure the data model meets the business requirements.
Part 5: Validating model scopeWe will focus on techniques for validating that the scope of the requirements matches the scope of the model. If the scope of the model is greater than the requirements, we have a situation known as scope creep. If the model scope is less than the requirements, we will be leaving information out of the resulting application.
Other training modules include:
Following acceptable modeling principles
Determining the optimal use of generic concepts
Applying consistent naming standards
Arranging the model for maximum understanding
Writing clear, correct, and consistent definitions
Matching the model with the enterprise
Comparing the meta data with the data
