I am not ashamed to admit that I am 28-going-on-29 and I absolutely love this book. It is very well written and highly detailed. As a Mehanical Engineer with 6+ years work experience I was certain that this book wouldn't live up to the expectations that the first few pages that I read in the book store led me to develop. Was I wrong!! This book's simplified expanation of engineering concepts is unmatched. From Lego block geometry to gearing setup and programming. This book has it all if you'd like to go beyond the few missions that the mindstorm kit comes with. Don't be mistaken this book has no step-by-step instructions for building robots. It only introduces "snippet" to get your creative "juices" flowing. My understanding of Legos and their use has been greatly enhanced. To make things even better, the authors includes useful information on other Lego parts that are not included with mindstorm that are very important, i.e. light sensors, hydraulics, etc. If you are looking for a reference book to help you build better Lego creations, this book is it!!

Data Modeling Made Simple: A Practical Guide for Business & Information Technology Professionals Review

Data Modeling Made Simple: A Practical Guide for Business and Information Technology Professionals

For over a year I'm looking for a good book to help business analysts to understand data models drawn by others and to train them in creating basic data models needed to cover business needs. I found a lot of good books but all too heavy, too many pages, too detailed and very nice if you want to become a real heavy duty data-guru. There is absolutely nothing wrong with data gurus, every organization needs a few of those, but it needs quite a few more of the 'casual' modellers. This book .. not too big.. a good read.. and even better reread.. It contains exactly everything that is needed for those modellers.
So, if you're a Business Analyst, Information Manager and need a good understanding of Data Modelling, even occasionally need to make one yourself, without having to spend years in training: buy this book..

Ever have a bad data day? If you're a business user, architect, analyst, designer or developer, then you've probably had some bad data days. It comes with the territory. Overcoming these problems is much easier if you have an in-depth understanding of the actual data. That's where a data model comes in handy. It's a diagram that uses text and symbols to represent groupings of data, giving you a clear picture of your business and application environment. Data Modeling Made Simple provides the tools you need to read, create and validate models of your business and applications.

This book contains everything about modeling you need to know but were too afraid to ask, such as:
-What are the traditional and nontraditional uses of a data model?
-How do subject area, logical, and physical data models differ?
-When do I build a BSAM, ASAM, or CSAM?
-What is the easiest way to apply normalization?
-Where can I best leverage abstraction?
-How do I decide whether to use denormalization or dimensionality?
-What are primary, foreign, alternate, virtual, and surrogate keys?
-What is the best approach to building the models?
-How can I use the Scorecard system to validate a data model?

Plus over 30 exercises to reinforce concepts and sharpen your skills!

Creating Cool MINDSTORMS NXT Robots (Technology in Action) Review

Creating Cool MINDSTORMS NXT Robots (Technology in Action)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're searching for some exciting NXT projects and ideas--or would simply like to build JohnNXT, a replica of the famous Johnny 5 robot--you will enjoy Daniele Benedettelli's book Creating Cool MINDSTORMS NXT Robots. The book presents helpful ideas that you can use in your own inventions and carefully integrates them in a variety of robots with detailed building instructions. In fact, these very features are why I've given the book five stars: challenging robot projects, excellent discussions of useful concepts and ideas, and exceptional building instructions.
Most of the robots seem intended for more advanced users looking for a challenge; in other words, these are generally more complex robots. For example, there are several walking robots--including three bipeds (two-legged robots), one of the most difficult types of robots to create. And with the exception of the massive, multi-NXT robot "JohnNXT" (chapter 8) and a remote control (chapter 9), you can build all the robots from the parts in a single retail LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT set. All the programming in the book is done in NXC (Not eXactly C), an unofficial text-based language with a C-like syntax.
Along the way you'll find in-depth explanations of robotics concepts and helpful descriptions of the robots. Besides an entire "theory chapter" on building biped robots (chapter 1) and another such chapter on finite state machines (chapter 3), the robot chapters themselves include explanations of concepts such as hysteresis, writing a multitask program, and quadruped (four-legged) walking as well as information on the robots' functionality and history. The author also does a good job of presenting and explaining the programming. Although prior NXC experience is helpful, such experience is not required.
The BIs (building instructions) are outstanding, which is important since they are a major part of the book. The author used advanced BI techniques, including complete electrical cables and callouts, and Ldglite to render the images, creating BIs that are remarkably "LEGO-like." I found that the BIs were generally very easy to follow even though many of the steps were complex. Such clarity is invaluable for a book that is filled with building instructions.
I admit that I didn't build the famed JohnNXT robot. Why? For starters, I don't have all the necessary pieces! All the same, I'm glad to see that the author included the robot because a number of readers will want tackle this enormous project.
In conclusion, this book is ideal for you if you're a more experienced NXT user looking to broaden your robotic horizons--while having lots of fun. Nevertheless, even if you're new to the NXT set, you would still enjoy the book. Either way, after working through the projects and grasping the concepts, you should be well-equipped to create your very own cool NXT robots.

Very nice hardback book with lots of stunning pictures of what else? Star Wars Legos!
We are big fans of Legos in general and this book did not disappoint. It came with a bonus Luke Skywalker mini-figure. As with all DK books, you get great pictures, thorough descriptions, and just a generally enjoyable book to collect or read.
I bought 2 copies of this book, one to read, and one to collect.
The only thing that bothered me a (very tiny) little bit was how the Luke Skywalker mini-fig was packaged. At first glance it looks like a much thicker book, but about half of the thickness is a spacer placed inside the book to make room for the mini-fig, so it lays flush with the front cover. I posted some pictures on the main item page if you want to see what I mean. Nothing that I would knock a star off for though.
Overall, we are VERY happy with this book. Great price for a quality book that will not disappoint young and old!

Building the Agile Database: How to Build a Successful Application Using Agile Without Sacrificing Data Management Review

Building the Agile Database: How to Build a Successful Application Using Agile Without Sacrificing Data Management

You can tell this book is written by someone from the trenches of the agile/data management war. The key takeaway for me is that there are principles and practices to use to make sure the business benefits from software development projects. We need to change our mindset when there are agile developers who just want to code and not document including doing some initial design up front. Also we need to change if there are data professionals who are adamant on completing the detailed design before coding. Somewhere in the middle there is a balance which maximizes business benefit. There is a lot of intellectual property given away in this book in the form of analogies, principles, and advice. For example, the author's concept of a virtual data layer has immediate applicability in my current assignment.

Is fast development the enemy of good development? Not necessarily. Agile development requires that databases are designed and built quickly enough to meet fast-based delivery schedules - but in a way that also delivers maximum business value and reuse. How can these requirements both be satisfied? This book, suitable for practitioners at all levels, will explain how to design and build enterprise-quality high-value databases within the constraints of an Agile project.
Starting with an overview of the business case for good data management practices, the book defines the various stakeholder groups involved in the software development process, explains the economics of software development (including "time to market" vs. "time to money"), and describes an approach to Agile database development based on the five PRISM principles.
This book explains how to work with application developers and other stakeholders, examines critical issues in Agile Development and Data Management, and describes how developers and data professionals can work together to make Agile projects successful while delivering maximum value data to the enterprise.
Building the Agile Database will serve as an excellent reference for application developers, data managers, DBAs, project managers, Scrum Masters and IT managers looking to get more value from their development efforts. Among the topics covered:
Why Agile is more than just the latest development fad
The critical distinction between the logical and physical views of data
The importance of data virtualization, and how to achieve it
How to eliminate the "object-relational impedance mismatch"
The difference between logical modeling and physical design
Why databases are more than "persistence engines"
When and how to do logical modeling and physical design
Use of the logical data model in model-driven development
Refactoring made easier
Developing an "Agile Attitude"

fruITion: Creating the Ultimate Corporate Strategy for Information Technology Review

fruITion: Creating the Ultimate Corporate Strategy for Information Technology
Average Reviews:

Let me start by saying that I had the pleasure and privilege of working directly with Chris at the last company I worked for.

The work that Chris undertook with my colleagues and me was ground-breaking, and even though it turned our world upside down, for all of the right reasons, it was an enjoyable and illuminating journey.

This book, which is an inspired piece of writing, bears absolutely no resemblance to any other book on strategy, IT or otherwise, that I have read. Most of these books are long, dry and, I have to say, almost unintelligible. FruITion, on the other hand, is an easy read - maybe even too easy, as the narrative style reads more like a good novel than a serious business book. And, of course, this was the intention, and it succeeds beautifully.

It would be easy to miss the important lessons this book teaches you, were it not for the fact that Chris summarises the key points at the end of each chapter.

I would therefore recommend reading it at least twice - once for the pleasure of a well-written book with a central character you really do care about, and once (or more) to make sure you take note of the real messages, which are all about realising the value of a company's investments, not only in IT but in all business change activities.

Having worked in that corporate environment for nearly 20 years, many of the characters and roles were too life-like for this book to be anything but the results of a great deal of experience and first-hand knowledge. In fact, I even sort of recognise people like me in there somewhere, as well as some that remind me of past colleagues, managers and directors, although it's clear that Chris has wisely invented his characters after working with so many people over the years.
When we worked together, it was back in 2000, and while this book neatly summarises much of what he brought to the company at the time, it also demonstrates a continual advancement in thinking as his already significant experience has grown.

I can testify that those elements of this book that were put in place as a result of his work altered and improved everything - what started as a reinvention of a very small team of people ended up affecting almost the entire company and the way they conducted and thought about their business.

It may be a cliché, but I really do wish this book had been available not only to me, but to many people at the company, all those years ago.

For those steeped in the traditions of the "IT department", this book will both shock and surprise you - the core message represents a quantum leap in thinking that will make you wonder why you haven't thought of it yourself.

And for those "normal" people who have always been outside of IT, and wondered what they all do, this book will be an eye-opener and a revelation in how to make IT work with and for you in your organisation.

This is one book that you really won't want to put down, and it has my highest recommendation!

Ian is a Chief Information Officer (CIO) who is about to go on a journey of change - whether he likes it or not. He will be expected to explore, challenge and radically recast the complex, often hostile relationships that can exist between a business and the people in its Information Technology (IT) department. On the way, Ian, his Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer and other key stakeholders, experience a transformation in how a business needs to think about the value of its IT people and the work that they do. This results in some truly groundbreaking innovations in the scope and contribution of Ian's role as CIO, the people that work for him and the strategy that he leads.
Watch the characters in this extraordinary business novel as they meet the challenge, struggle and grow. Share in Ian's transformation, and join the author in observing key messages as the adventure unfolds.
Part entertaining novel and part enlightening textbook - FruITion takes the reader through a discovery process revealing indispensable messages about the next generation of strategies for Information Technology.- Jeremy Hall, Managing Director, IRM UK Strategic IT Training
FruITion brings vividly to life the issues of being a CIO in today's corporate world and how IT, when properly integrated into the objectives of a business can drive massive value creation. His insights into how to win the engagement war and bring technology strategies alive for the non technical are absolutely spot on.- Steve Adams, COO and Managing Director for Card Services, Euronet Worldwide
The modern CIO is to be seen as part of the business rather than a service provider to the business. Chris Potts is at the forefront of thinking that will put us all there if we act on his inspiration.- David Brown, CIO of Scottish Water
More from the author, Chris PottsThe debate over the CIO role, and about the extent to which it should be about business or technology, is taking place in an increasing vacuum of strategic context. Some CIOs have abandoned strategy altogether, while others persevere with a traditional IT Strategy founded in the mindset of the mainframe era. Meanwhile, business managers and staff continue to develop their knowledge of technology and understanding of how to exploit it. There seems to be a presumption that the next-generation strategic purpose of the CIO will be an incremental step on from what has gone before - significant, maybe, but still incremental. What if the CIO's new strategic context is not incremental but disruptive, requiring a very different mindset and skillset? And, most crucially, what if the corporate strategists - rather than the CIO community - are the ones deciding what context is? Their offer to the CIO: you can become one of the corporate strategists like us, but not with your traditional scope and approach to strategy. What does that offer look like and what does it mean for incumbent CIOs and the people who work for them?

I chose this book to teach a 6 year old new student. It's a wonderful book because it progresses slowly- each page introduces one new concept and has the child practise it in small steps. It is perfect because the child does not become overwhelmed. The illustrations are really nice too. And the print is big and spacious-looking. You can also get it with a CD that goes along with it for $1 more.
After ordering the Usborne book here and finding it crowded and confusing, I went to my local music store and picked this book out of all the beginning piano books. It's a really nice one.
