(More customer reviews)This is an excellent source for teaching beginner piano lessons. I used it when I began taking piano lessons 26 years ago and used it when I began teaching lessons 7 years ago. It is basic without being boring. I have just moved to a new community and am starting with brand new students - I can't imagine using anything but Bastiens books.

(More customer reviews)The photography in this book is beautiful, but I already do massage and it didn't teach me anything I didn't already know. I recommend it-- but if you are already a massage therapist, you probably won't get anything out of it. They showed the woman touching herself but the man had his under the blanket-- is the male model inadequate? Why only pencil drawings of the male genitalia? That didn't make much of a difference for my assessment of the of the book. I'd hoped it would have gotten more into prostate massage for a straight woman to do on her husband.

Making It: Manufacturing Techniques for Product Design Review

Highly recommended book for engineering/industrial design students, teachers and anyone interested in understanding what processes "things" go through before they end up in stores.

Modern Recording Techniques, Sixth Edition Review

(More customer reviews)Modern? As a reprint this book is getting pretty old now and would really benefit from some new material. I'm also not sure who the audience is meant to be. It's too generalised to appeal to someone who understands the fundamentals of recording and yet would probably scare off someone who is relatively new to the subject.
The format is very text bookish and is let down by the lack of solid tips, techniques and examples that would have bought this otherwise ordinary book to life.
Unless you have the luxury of already owning all the other recording books advertised on Amazon I would shunt this one further down the list.

It gives tips on using a scanner to get drawings or photographs into a layer of Photoshop and then how to manipulate the layers including opacity and filters. The technics for using markers and colored pencils to achieve realistic wood, rocks,leaves, water, and chrome are outstanding. Includes great tips on paper colors, and what to include or leave out of a drawing to give it visual punch. The entire 414 pages are drawings and tips specifically dedicated to the needs of architects, landscape architects, and interior designers though any graphic person would find tremendous value in this book.

The Pop-Up Book: Step-by-Step Instructions for Creating Over 100 Original Paper Projects Review

(More customer reviews)I own several books on pop-up techniques and this is one of my favorites. This is a large format, beautifully illustrated book filled with sound, easy to learn techniques, well-photographed and explained. It also includes lovely examples of more professional work using the techniques which serve as a gallery of inspiration. Jackson is a natural instructor whose passion for paper engineering is infectious.
In answer to the reviewers who were disappointed that this doesn't spoon feed you exact projects to slavishly copy down to the last fraction of an inch, there are examples to copy in here, but I don't believe that was the point of this book. The step by step examples are actually quite good, but this isn't meant to be a pattern book to cut out or copy and then glue together. The point is to allow the reader/user to master the basics of paper engineering techniques and materials so that the reader can then make his/her own projects. The step by step examples are meant as teaching tools. The point of the book is to learn skills, be inspired by photographed examples, and to use this as a starting point for creating your own work.
The author did do another which I believe is called "Paper Pop ups" that does have page after page of pop ups that you can cut out or copy and glue together, and there are some other wonderful pop ups in there that are not in this one. However, one of the things I love about this book is that it clearly explains the basics for someone who is unfamiliar with the techniques, yet it isn't dumbed down. He teaches you skills and provides pictures of examples that provide a foundation for using your imagination so you can create, rather than copy templates.
