(More customer reviews)When I bought this book, I thought I'd be getting a book which tells me more about using sugarpaste to decorate cakes, new techniques, designs, etc.... I was wrong. It doesn't even have the drapes in sugarpaste.
As it turns out, it is basically a book with pictures of cakes, which have been decorated on a base of sugarpaste. Even the parts where there is some modelling done in sugarpaste, it doesn't seen very well described, or illustrated. Definitely something of a dissapointment. It spends as much time on piping icing as it does on sugarpaste.
I also have 'The International School of Sugarcraft' for beginners, and that tells me all that I need to know, and is better illustrated. However, if you need pictures of cakes for ideas, this may be an okay book for you.
DEFINITELY not a book for beginners!! It has directions like 'Shape the shoe from sugarpaste'!!! I mean, if I knew how to do that on command, then I won't be needing directions - I'd just be buying books with cakes in them, and making them myself. So much for step by step instructions....

(More customer reviews)I'm an advanced intermediate player with 16 years' experience but due to a lack of players in my area I often find myself playing opponents with beginner-level skills. Because unsolicited advice on the court is not always welcome or easily absorbed, I'd like to have a good book on fundamentals to suggest or loan to my friends. This isn't it. It's wildly scattered, rambling, and self-contradictory, with poor diagrams and useless photos. It jumps right in with drive-serve lessons without talking about fundamentals of grip, posture, body position, shot mechanics or footwork. The most common mistakes of beginners (apart from failure to get back to center court) are not strenuously identified and singled out for concentrated attention: watch your opponent make his/her shot; do not chase the ball, let it come to you; do not hit anything bound for the back wall at higher than waist-height - let it go to the back wall; the ceiling shot (hitting it and returning it) is the most important shot in the game at this level; always face the side wall when making a shot; aim your shot with your feet and body; hit drives and kills from knee-ankle height, etc. These are mentioned in passing (no pun intended) at random places and for sure there are bits and pieces of good advice (like the purpose of a return is to move the server from center court) scattered throughout the book, but they're buried in so much drivel, contradiction, and occasional downright misinformation that a beginner would never be able to tell what's important at their level and what's not. Mr. Winterton may be a fine player and coach in person, and his dropping names of top-level players may be impressive, but giving this book to a beginner would be doing them a genuine disservice.

(More customer reviews)Enoeda sensei is one of the most famous experts on free fighting in the Shotokan world. This book is an excellent reference for an intermediate-to-advanced student. The early chapters teach basic techniques, and provide descriptions and photographs explaining each. As the book progresses, combinations for attack and defense (counterattack) are introduced, as well as a discussion of one of the more difficult points of free-fighting, continuation. The emphasis in this book is clearly on Shotokan as a sport and an art, and not so much on self-defense, but successfully applying one to the other is really just a matter of practice. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone studying Shotokan -- beginners will benefit tremendously from the early chapters, and more advanced students will derive great benefits from the free-fighting lessons. Particularly, this would be a good resource for anyone training alone -- the chapter layout can be translated almost directly into training sessions.
