Does Technology Drive History? The Dilemma of Technological Determinism Review

Does Technology Drive History The Dilemma of Technological Determinism

This collection of essays purportedly addresses the philosophical theory of technological determinism - the belief that human behavior and culture is driven by technology and its unintended (or intended) consequences. Of course, the theory has many nuances and permutations, which are explored in depth by the various writers here. The book starts off with fine introductions to the topic, particularly the opening essay by Merritt Roe Smith and the seminal "Do Machines Make History?" by Robert Heilbroner. Unfortunately the book then descends into standard turgid theoretical obfuscations of dubious usefulness to anyone other than each professor's immediate colleagues. Examples include the standard academic exercise of reinterpreting the ideas of earlier thinkers and calling the results a new theory (Bruce Bimber, Thomas Mina), or forcing existing theories together and taking credit for the resulting "breakthrough" (Rosalind Williams, Leo Marx). Another running issue in this book is a lack of distinction among technology, progress, and modernity, as can be seen in the otherwise fascinating historical report by Michael L. Smith. And as usual for academic books that collect essays by various professors, everybody repeats the basic tenets of the theory at issue before embarking on their particular interpretation or example of interest. One benefit of this book is that the editors (both in their introduction and through the essay selection process) do not try to nail down a particular position on the many nuances of technological determinism, which is healthy for purposes of discussion. Regardless, little is accomplished by the writers except esoteric reinterpretations and feeble grasps for significance. [~doomsdayer520~]

These thirteen essays explore a crucial historical question that has beennotoriously hard to pin down: To what extent, and by what means, does a society'stechnology determine its political, social, economic, and cultural forms?Karl Marxlaunched the modern debate on determinism with his provocative remark that "thehand-mill gives you society with the feudal lord; the steam-mill, society with theindustrial capitalist," and a classic article by Robert Heilbroner (reprinted here)renewed the debate within the context of the history of technology. This bookclarifies the debate and carries it forward.Marx's position has become embedded inour culture, in the form of constant reminders as to how our fast-changingtechnologies will alter our lives. Yet historians who have looked closely at wheretechnologies really come from generally support the proposition that technologiesare not autonomous but are social products, susceptible to democratic controls. Theissue is crucial for democratic theory. These essays tackle it head-on, offering adeep look at all the shadings of determinism and assessing determinist models in awide variety of historical contexts.Contributors : Bruce Bimber. Richard W. Insect Media: An Archaeology of Animals and Technology (Posthumanities) Review

Insect Media: An Archaeology of Animals and Technology (Posthumanities)

(More customer reviews)
For a title that uses a 'honeycomb' design as the cover motif, and which advertises itself as an "archaeology of animals and technology," the actual discussion of insectoid-technological relationships is quite thin on the ground. The forays into entomological research are particularly limited (the example of von Frisch's "dancing bees" is the only one I can remember Parikka discussing), and after reading a chapter or two you'll begin to realize that the author is just using a colorful and emotionally resonant insect metaphor to resurrect media theory tropes that are already familiar. That is to say, this is another one of "those" academic books wherein a sexy premise of hitherto unforeseen correspondences and connections is used to bait the reader into reading a catechism of radical thinkers' thoughts on tangentially related matters. As with other titles in that vein, the best thing that a non-academic reader can do with it is to just read it backwards: head directly to the index, look for unfamiliar names and concepts, check out the interesting things they have to say personally (most of the material in this book that I highlighted was from the author's sources, rather than Parikka himself), then track down their own material and spare yourself another tiring journey into the simultaneously baroque and sterile verbiage utilized here. It's not that Parikka has nothing interesting to discuss, and no valid points of his own to make (although, regarding the latter, the constant use of Deleuze-Guattari as a life preserver is too predictable for someone who has clearly absorbed a massive amount of written information.) Still, it would be better if this book was marketed and sold as a series of loosely connected essays bonded together by a wholly different thesis point- that would go some way towards rectifying it since, again, the discussions of animality and ethology seem like no more than ornamentation for broader discussions of digital-age phenomenology- put simply, they never convincingly become the driving engine of those discussions, even when Parikka closes chapters with conclusive self-referential paragraphs about what we learned. That last point brings me to another amusing quirk of the text- Parikka often bookends individual chapters with disclaimers about what he intends to discuss and with end-of-chapter de-briefings. It's done to a conspicuously greater degree than what I'm used to, and it leads me to believe that a.) he is not confident enough to let his writing "speak for itself" and b.) he is content with having the work appreciated by a solely academic audience, who would be the only ones requiring such textual formalities. I certainly had a laugh-out-loud moment when, well after the introductory phases of the book ended, phrases such as "my intent with this book is to...." appeared anew. Now, I hate to use this space to launch an attack on academic publishing in general, but so much of this book serves as an example of why this community continues to sever itself from a not insignificant reading public of self-educated individuals. There are fine specimens here of the academic conviction that saying something synonymous - 'translated' into field jargon - is akin to saying something radically new. On page 163, this tendency is taken to its logical conclusion and a statement taken from a secondary source is merely repeated outright: "the neighborhood of every boid was designed as a spherical zone of sensitivity [...] hence the boid was governed by a zone of sensitivity." You don't say! Other readers than myself may recoil at the re-packaging of easily observed, simply intuited facts like "people are social animals" as something that has revelatory consequences for "posthuman" thought. This insane project of over-complicating the universe needs to stop, especially since its "posthumanist" wing now claims to be allied with non-human life that seems pretty disinterested in finding other, more difficult ways to do things it already knows how to do. I think that Parikka will truly soar as a writer when he no longer feels compelled to lend this project his support. My final criticism, while it again applies to this book in particular, also applies to something that's becoming a depressing trend within university press-issued titles: is it really asking too much for endnotes sections to be reserved for citations and other ephemeral asides, rather than forcing the reader to continually shuttle back and forth between the endnote section and the main body of the text, both of which contain equally relevant information? I'm sorry, but when single endnotes begin to take up entire pages of a book, that I have to wonder if there wasn't some way to better integrate them into the main text. If anyone at University of Minnesota's editorial department reads this, please know that this annoying convention of academic publishing will prevent me from buying any books released by you in the future.

Since the early nineteenth century, when entomologists first popularized the unique biological and behavioral characteristics of insects, technological innovators and theorists have proposed insects as templates for a wide range of technologies. In Insect Media, Jussi Parikka analyzes how insect forms of social organization-swarms, hives, webs, and distributed intelligence-have been used to structure modern media technologies and the network society, providing a radical new perspective on the interconnection of biology and technology.

LEGO Software Power Tools, With LDraw, MLCad, and LPub Review

LEGO Software Power Tools, With LDraw, MLCad, and LPub

I wasn't sure if this book would be worth picking up as I already know how to use MLCad... First off-you should get it from Amazon.com and save yourself a bundle.
It is a boon to have all of these programs in one place. They install very easily and you dont have any problems getting them up and running. That is a very good thing, especially for LEGO fans who are new to this stuff.
Second-there is some new information in here, even for long time users of MLCad like me. LSynth is amazing--MLCad users will be very happy to be able to finally include all of those flexible elements into their model files. I haven't started fooling around with LPub yet but it looks very interesting--basically allows you to create instructions a-la the sets you get with a real LEGO kit.
All in all I'd recommend this book, especially to someone who is new to these programs. There is nothing in this book that you
can't find on the web...
and the other sites whre you can download these programs and their instructions, or poking around on the forums.
HOWEVER!!!!! It would take you days, if not weeks, to assemble all of the info that is between the covers of this book, which I think makes it very worth while.
Check it out!

Some books in the past have touched on one or two of these LEGO applications, but none has covered them all in such detail. ØCD provides all of these freeware applications in one easy to install program. Included CD packs more than 8 applications into one easy-to-use format, making it easy for readers to have access to all of these applications in minutes and avoid the headaches of trying to download, install, configure, set up folder structures, and troubleshoot such a wide variety of loosely related freeware applications.ØWill coincide with the release of Lpub. Digital Painting Techniques: Practical Techniques of Digital Art Masters (Masters Collection) Review

Digital Painting Techniques: Practical Techniques of Digital Art Masters (Masters Collection)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Digital Painting Techniques is a compilation of tutorials written by various talented digital artists. It is broken up into eight chapters with roughly five to seven tutorials apiece, and a gallery at the end. The physical book itself is well bound so that when open it lies flat for easy reference while you work.
The chapters are: Custom Brushes, Speed Painting, Matte Painting, Creatures, Humans, Environments, Sci-Fi and Fantasy, and Complete Projects.
The tutorials, with the exception of a few, use Photoshop; the noted exceptions also use Painter. (In the final chapter, one artist also uses Artweaver and Gimp, while another uses Cinema 4D. But for sake of argument, assume this is a Photoshop digital painting book.) And some of the tutorials also come with assets available to download from the book's website.
As for the content, let's say that some tutorials were more thorough and useful than others. While the visuals that went alongside them were stunning, a few of the brush tutorials amounted to little more than how to save a new brush in Photoshop. But the remaining brush tutorials delved into the why and how of creating a custom brush for useful application and saving time, then illustrated its use.
Some of the subsequent tutorials were vague; one example step stating "use a textured brush"--with no indication or example of the texture, only a screenshot of the elapsed painting. Luckily that didn't happen too often.
Most of the tutorials provided screenshots of software settings, brushes used, and picture progress with clear explanations. Creature Concept 101 by Mike Corriero, Paint Luscious Lips by Anne Pogoda, The Human Face by Nykolai Aleksander, and The Environmental Series by Carlos Cabrera immediately spring to mind.
Finally, the book could have used another round of edits for consistency, especially in reference to software terminology. Also, some of the page layouts made it difficult to locate referenced figures throughout (i.e. see Fig 4, which would be an inset of another figure on a previous page). Nothing too egregious, but something to be aware of.
Overall, this is an excellent resource for digital artists looking for inspiration and to learn some new techniques. It comes with the caveat, however, that this is not a book for beginners; you won't find tutorials for preparing a digital canvas, mimicking paint consistencies, or color blending. So while this book won't replace a good foundational book on digital painting, it would make a great supplement.

Once again Syngres has put together a top notch team of Lego builders. The robots in here are incredible to say the least. I was amazed to see that CS Soh had a hand in this book as I've been a big fan of his LEGO work on the web for some time. I just finished building all of the robots in the prequel to this book for the Star Wars Dark side lego kit when I saw this become available. These are all top notch robots built by people who know their lego robots. They don't beat around the bush-they give you step by step instructions for buidling these robots. They go one step beyond the first book by giving you alternate building instructions for download. I'm going to use this in my high school robotics class. Top notch.

Data Modeling Made Simple: A Practical Guide for Business and IT Professionals, 2nd Edition Review

Data Modeling Made Simple: A Practical Guide for Business and IT Professionals, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think very highly of Data Modeling Made Simple (the first edition), so when this second edition came out I had great expectations - which were not only met but also exceeded. Although this second edition is more than twice the number of pages as the first edition, it is still an easy read.
Here are my favorite things about this book:
1.Clearly delivers on its ten objectives. Read the back cover and you will understand the key takeaways you will get after reading the book. After I read the book, I went back over each of these objectives and I was able to check each of these off as accomplished. Everything from justifying the model to building data models to assessing data models was knowledge I gleaned from the book. If you are interested in just one or a subset of these ten objectives, read the Read Me First section and it will reference the sections and chapters you need to read to meet your specific objective.
2.More examples more thoroughly presented. The first edition took a business card example from beginning to end. This edition further expands the business card example and adds several other examples including an ice cream example and many real world examples. The author uses spreadsheets to illustrate many modeling examples, and I too have found spreadsheets to be a very effective way to communicate data and business rules.
3.Data Model Scorecard. The first edition touched on the Scorecard which is the author's technique to reviewing a data model. This second edition goes into detail including providing the template which I can use on my modeling assignments to review my models.
4.Treating a dimensional model as more than just a physical data model. Many texts treat the dimensional as only a physical data model yet there is a business level that this book illustrates at both the subject area and logical levels.
5.Getting other Greats for free. Bill Inmon, Graeme Simsion, and Michael Blaha have all written chapters in this book. I have already starting using Simsion's technique of a diary on my assignments and found it very useful.
My only area for improvement would be to expand the book with more modeling conventions such as ORM and IDEF1X. There is a chapter on UML though that I did find informative. I question however if adding these extra notations would detract from the book's simplicity.
Overall, an excellent read that I would recommend to every business or techie that works with data.

Rolando Gomez's Posing Techniques for Glamour Photography Review

Rolando Gomez's Posing Techniques for Glamour Photography
Average Reviews:

I have read a few of Rolando's books. I have actually shot with a few of his favorite models. Rolando is good...no doubt. The book is well written and offers many points and tips for any photographer interested in Glamour or not. My thing about this book is that I'm not into this type of photography so I think that tainted my review to just 4 stars instead of 5. I just want to be honest!
As I have stated in numerous reviews, the price makes this book worth it. I have hundreds of dollars worth of Amherst Media books and it's for a reason....they make EXCELLENT resource books for WHEN I want ideas or need them. I read them, critique them, implement numerous ideas, and put sticky notes on pages for future reference.
Definitely take a look at this book. You WILL like it!

Literally working from head to toe, the images in this essential guide to glamour photography demonstrate how to flatter models' assets and downplay any perceived flaws when there is no clothing to hide behind. Detailed instructions on recreating classic poses and a thorough discussion of the three main sections of the body-upper body, lower body, and backside-are coupled with ample photographic examples. Abundant illustrations reveal how to manipulate a model's tresses, garner the best possible views of the face, and visually enhance the appearance of the breasts, arms, abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, calves, feet, and toes. Best-practice techniques for maximizing curves and minimizing bulk will make each subject look her personal best. Because of the intimate nature of nude and semi-nude photo shoots, suggestions for easing into the shoot while staying on task and ensuring a subject's comfort are also discussed.
